A few years ago, a friend and I had hunt tags for one of the state’s exotic game animals (Oryx). They are down south in the desert mostly on the white sands missile range, but they do stray off the military range and we were hunting on the adjacent BLM and State lands. One day around midday we stopped to eat lunch under a shade tree next to an old abandoned ranch house. After lunch, my hunting partner said he was going to check out the house, and I was also curious about the place. We went to the door and found it unlocked and went inside. Jose reached over and flicked the light switch and surprisingly the ceiling light came on. We looked around and saw the place was fully furnished but dust covered everything about 1/2” thick. On the kitchen table, we found an old newspaper from 1958. It was kind of creepy so we went back outside. I pulled out the BLM land status map and saw that we were standing exactly 11 miles due north of the Trinity atomic bomb detonation site. As we were leaving, we saw a sign on the old barn that stated “U.S. Government Property.” We figured that the ranch was bought out by the government after the prior owners were stricken by radiation sickness or some type of cancer. The Trinity bomb was detonated in 1945 and 1958 was 13 years later, so the ranch was probably inhabited for those 13 years following the bomb test. We never found out for sure what happened, but this same story did happen to many other ranch families in the area. Doctor Oppenheimer’s death came for many people for years after the Manhattan project was over.
