Cool Or Creepy Things Found In The Bush Or On Your Property

Not too many people swim in Lake Superior. I tried it once and came out a popsicle. I heard that Edmund Fitzgerald drowned up there though.
Join the club! We have jackets! 🧥;) Yes, I have done the same. Popsicle city. Not that different to jumping into the ocean in Northern California. People don't do well in either location when they fall out of boats or capsize.

Did you know that the song lyrics had what is believed to be the probable cause of the sinking years before anyone knew?

All the best,

Peter

If anyone ever gets the chance to stop by the shipwreck museum at Whitefish Point, it's worth the trip. Then take a walk down to the beach and stick your feet in the water. Your ankles will go numb in about 5 seconds to the point of pain. Everyone's wearing jackets and hats. Then some guy in a speedo walks past and goes for his daily swim. Yikes!

July 4 1955 St. Lawrence Islland Alaska. That is in the Bering Sea. Me and 3 buddies were strolling on the beach, beautiful day, warm, sea calm. "let's go swimming" one of us brain buckets says. So strip down back off from teh edge a ways and charge with the idea of diving in. Not a good Idea. I could almost swear that the 3 buddies were running back on top of the water. I had chickened out.

Last fall while mowing around customers lake on my ZT, saw this laying in the grass. It doesnt seem big, but it was 3-4 feet long.
Pretty sure its the skeletal remains of a grass carp. Thing I dont understand is how it ended up 10’ from waters edge? Would a fox try to grab it and kill it in shallow water?

Fox, raccoon, or ? When I was growing up the neighbor at our camp had a cat who would go down on the dock and catch bass.

Lots of reasons. Dead already and dragged up. Dying on the bank and dragged up. I once saw about a foot long sucker fish flopping around on the bank of our creek. I went to investigate and found talon marks in it.

A couple years ago my wife and I were walking in a state park, out in a field. There were thousands of small 4" and under dead fish as far as the eye could see, 1/4 mile from the river. But that was explained by a recent flood.

Seems pretty big for a cat or raccoon. Those things weigh 10-15lb easily. I like the bird of prey Moss spoke of. Maybe a bald eagle grabbed it, picked the carcass for what it wanted and left the rest?
Maybe was dying and buzzards brought it up onto the lawn and had a backyard Feast?

We live on the flat black dirt farmground far from any water. At best we have man-made "ditches" to catch field tile runoff. Anyway, back in maybe 2002 we had a terrible storm that came off the Plains and battered us with very high winds and pounding rains and hail. It was a heck of a night and we were all shaken even though we're pretty tough.

Anyway, in the calm and sun of the next day with puddles and water everywhere we noticed there were a number of dried crayfish-looking things that had blown up against they house. They looked like little New England lobsters but were fresh water.

We asked around thinking this was some flat ground phenomenon and no one knew what we were talking about. People gave me that funny look. Maybe they were kidding me but those little lobster/crayfish/whatever were there and likely carried in on a "not in Kansas anymore, Toto" kind of thing. Still don't know what they were or where they came from.

Could they have been empty insect, e.g. cicada, pupae cases?

No, not like that at all. It looked like a very small lobster or maybe a "biggish" crayfish. I'm familiar with lobsters but know nothing of crayfish. There were maybe 20 of them blown into the corner of the yard up against the house. There are almost no trees near us and not many heading west to block the wind.

I'm familiar with cicadas from around here.
