coon after cat food

/ coon after cat food #21
I watch coons in my yard every nite eating a 5 gal pail full of day old bread that we give them and they don't choke. In reality coons have a very dry mouth, that is why if they are near a water source they will put their food into it before eating it. We have studied them, raised them and put them back into the wild where they are meant to be. The most important thing to a wild animal is food, mating and defending the young and in that order. I am not an expert but I do know coons. Elimate the food sounce and they will move on.

Sorry to offend you. I don't put out antifreeze either. I sent you a PM.
Didn't mean to offend you, or to mislead you. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The easiest thing to do is buy a small metal garbage can and keep your feed in that. Use a bungee cord through the lid handle to both can handles to keep the smarter coons out. The only problem with live trapping is occassionally you end up with a skunk instead of a possum or coon. Then you have a real problem if that trap's inside someplace like a barn.

I learned that the hard way.

Why not just trap the animal and drive way out in the country several miles where no one livesand release the animals instead of drowning them ?

Because I don't want the nuisance animals dropped off at my place out in the country either, that's why.

Let me clarify myself.....I would trap and release because I can take the animals to places where there are not houses for 4 or 5 miles in any direction. I would not release a wild animal that would be a nuisance where other people live.
I would never dump a dog or cat no matter what. I have poultry and on occasion a coon gets one and I would not hesitate to dust a coon or a fox with my 30/30. I just do not like to drown an animal. Thats just me.

I agree re: drowning. If one has to put an animal down, have the decency to dispatch it quickly, even if that is less pleasant than heaving it over a bridge in a sack. However...even if there are no houses for several miles, dropped animals simply increase the population density of critters that are generally overpopulated anyway. I understand that it feels better than killing it, but in my opinion it is generally just another way of letting someone else deal with the problem.

Now let me clarify that I am not saying that in a demeaning sense, nor am I trying to put you or anyone else down. You have the same right to choose your solution as I do to choose mine. This is just how I see things.

Cactus,
I can't disagree with you more. It's my understanding that a wild animal that has learnt to depend on man, will continue to. 4 or 5 miles doesn't matter, they have legs. If you have live trapped this animal, then by definition it's a nuisance. Take responsibility for your own problems and don't dump them on others. Dust it with your 30/30, drown it, nail it to a tree for all I care. I live on the edge of an area like you've described (state game lands, coal co, electic co owned land, game preserves, and sportsmans clubs). A number of years ago my wife was attacked by a coon, in broad daylight. Our diffences are a lot like the chicken and pig discussing a ham and egg breakfast. Like the chicken you're involved, but like the pig, I'm committed.
I have no desire to start a "war" and am sure you believe that your actions are responsible (as do others that trap and release). But since I'm the receipient of these animals, I see this situation very differently.
