We had another round of storms go thru last night...2nd time this week. The ground (clay) was already soft from the previous rain, so it didn't take much to blow my corn flat. I got out this morning before heading to work and surveyed the damage. Looks like I had a couple of tomato cages blow over, but I will have to rework several ( I only had one stake on each cage).

A neighbor who farms was at my house last night , and he said we got 2 inches earlier this week. I am pretty sure we probably got that much again last night.
I assume you guys in southern Ohio got some bad wind too. I will have my work cut out for me this weekend to straighten things up around here. My corn was pretty tall, not sure how well it will recoup without some manual intervention.

I will take the rain....but enough on the wind already !

Pete,
We had storms go through yesterday in my corner of the state. They seemed to split where I live. Heavy to the south. Heavy to the north. NO RAIN at all where I live. Well I guess that is a lie, we had about 15 minutes of light drizzle. Everything is wilting, even the weeds.

Same thing here, west of you, Bob. Just a few spits and plenty of thunder. We are really hurting for rain. I water my flowers, but don't waste it on the lawn. It is now brown and crunchy except in the shade.

Funny thing about SOUTH BEND. It is on the extreme NORTH border of our State, and it is EAST of the Illinois/Indiana state line, where I live. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As for the crunchy grass, ours started "crunching" about a week ago. I noticed it while walking the dog. I was wondering what was making noise. It was the grass crunching under my feet! I can't remember when we acutally got rain last. There have been some rains that hit Chicago and Gary north of me. Rains that went south of me through Kankakee. Heck just this week I was driving home from my office (17 miles north of my home) and started out in the rain, by the time I got home it was bone dry. The southern end of the rain brushed north of Cedar Lake, IN which is only a few miles from me. I stopped at the local butcher shop for some grilling meat (rib eye) and talked to him for a while, his shop is on the far west side of Cedar Lake and said the rain ended about a mile north.

My corn is in bad shape. Ditto the tomatoes, peppers, pumkins, watermelon, honeydew, eggplants, leeks, beans . . . . I planted a garden that is easily over 1 acre and I'm not sure that I'll actually have a harvest this year.

The only good weather news we have is that the heat is supposed to break today. Its been brutal with temps in the mid-90's, NO BREEZE and moderately high humidity. Heck the dog didn't even want to go outside.

We got rained out at a friend's house, about 5 miles south of Bloomington last night. Since we needed rain, I didn't mind. Huge lightening, power out, mud and limbs on the road back to town. Wouldn't you know it, at my house on the near north side of town, we only got 1/8 inch!

Pete,

Up here in Northeast Ohio we got some pretty good gusts - probably 40 mph+.

It was interesting ... I was out weeding in the garden when the wind started. It preceded the rain (what little we got) by probably 1/2 hour.

Watched the bands move in on radar - big line west of here headed right for us ...... just before it gets here the portion of the band directly west of us fades out and dissapates .... north and south of us get gully washers and we get diddly.

Yeah, North to get to South Bend.
South to get to North Judson.
And the old joke about French Lick not being anything like it sounds...
Hey, at least we got the time issue all straightened out, right? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Funny thing is, we have had no rain but came home from vacation to find swallows building a mud nest under our porch on top of the thermometer reading 100 degrees. I don't know where they were getting that mud from. Everything is parched. The birds spend a lot of time sitting in the shade with their beaks hanging open. Don't know if it is the heat or the taste of dirt! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Randall's right lots of hot air blasts and very little rain here, grass really needs moisture badly. Hey Randy how's the corn coming? We have some here waist high now....

We got it up here in Minnesota too! And yes my corn is down. This is already the second planting of my corn and I don't think I can re-plant at this time of year. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Was looking forward to the corn.

I'm pretty sure the density of tractors and implements in NW Indiana and NE Ohio, may be causing an electromagnetic anomoly which has been restricting the formation of cumulus clouds required for rain.

I first thought it had to do with frequency of attending church, but then analyzed my situation and had to throw that theory out.

I ran a curvelinear regression analysis and determined there was a strong correlation to the number of tractors and implements owned by TBN members to the areas that had less rain. Those areas with less implements seemed to get more rain.

I am going to put my hip boots on and see if I can wade out and stand my corn back up. Hope you guys get rain soon.
