Corn on the Cob Anyone?

Got to get one of these.
Corn Butterer

I do love corn on the cob with lots of butter and a little salt. One of the only foods I put salt on, never tried it with pepper.

Thanks Bird, I want to try it but we are way out of season, not sure if we can even get it now in the big grocery stores.

How does it taste out of the nuke oven? is it as good as boiled?

JB, while looking for the special dishes for corn on the cob, I saw that corn butterer on Amazon.com.

And yesterday afternoon, I was in Bed Bath & Beyond and bought this set of 4 dishes for corn on the cob. I don't know whether they are safe for the microwave (only long enough to melt better, of course) or not, but they have one great feature; they were cheap.:laughing:

Just viewed the video, we have almost always nuked corn in the microwave to cook it, but have never seen that method of shucking it. Is it REALLY that much work to shuck corn? Have never thought so.

Personally, while I love fresh sweet corn I have never liked eating it off the cob. Gnawing is fine for dogs who have a bone....but I don't enjoy corn that way.

I always preferred eating it off the cob. This may be due to the fact that my grandfather, father, and I had a ritual of seeing who could eat the most and leave the cleanest cobs.

Properly picked and cooked sweet corn virtually pops off the cob, no "gnawing" involved.
But even properly picked sweet corn requires effort and attention to detail to remove the silk. I've never been able to shuck it with 1 cut and three shakes.

Of course there are people that would just as soon eat store bought canned corn also.

But my West Virginia born wife does. And she does gnaw it off, leaving a ragged cob.:laughing:

Never made a contest of it, but sounds as if you do it like I do, pop off whole kernels, and yep, it does leave a clean cob.:laughing:

Incidentally, is there going to be some kind of corn shortage this year? I first noticed Walmart had corn for $0.25 an ear, then one Walmart had it for $0.20 for awhile, and then it started up. We bought a few for $0.30 an ear, and the last time I was in Walmart, it was $0.40 an ear.

Heck, Bird....there is never a real shortage but people drive up the price because they think there will be one. Local Meijers ad this week advertises 12 ears of Florida bicolor corn for $2. Much too early for any local corn to be available.

I guess it was closer to July 4th last year, but we bought corn at $0.10 an ear.

I got the Farm Bureau news report today and they were reporting the USDA saying, "...that corn production for this crop year is projected at a record high of 14,790 million bushels, 20% better than last years crop." They went on to say that the increased yield should ease the price. Now granted, they are talking feed corn, but I think it would stand to reason that eating corn could behave similarly. I sure hope it does at least, I just love getting fresh Olathe sweet corn when it hits the stores.

I do wonder how much of the feed corn crop will be used to produce fuel and what will happen to the prices for both corn and fuel as a result of the increased production. Your post makes me wonder about the cost to grow both types of corn.

That's good news . . . unless you're a farmer raising that corn.
