This is kind of silly...I'd guess most mail carriers/handlers will be wearing gloves as the bigger threat would come from infected persons that licked and sealed envelopes that hold letters/documents that had previously been in close proximity to possibly infected persons...

If you spray the outside of an envelope for protection from the mail carrier etc...what are you going to do with what's inside?
That was my point, with looking it all over outside and throwing it away out there. You would have to spray the outside and inside contents which I should have explained better.

Want to know how serious this is in Europe? The largest makeup maker has switched all production to hand sanitizer.

And the largest producer of gin has stopped production and converted to making a spray on disinfectant for use in hospitals and other places.

Google it and read the articles.

You explained it fine. Protecting yourself by washing your hands after you've carried the mail in the house and opened it is the silly part. Not the fact of hand washing. The fact of thinking that makes it all safe.

Yeah we haven't scratched the surface of our ability to ramp up production of necessities if needed.

This is good for a worst case scenario of the virus itself...but a bigger threat to the majority of Americans is what can possibly happen to disrupt the supply chain of necessary goods etc...

Dealing with large numbers of sick people can be coped with...dealing with large numbers of starving people is another issue all together...

My comment was about the character of the man Francis Collins than the virus itself. The outcome of the course of the virus at this point in time is set for the most part I expect. I went to Walmart first thing this morning and you are correct about the supply chain of necessary goods. I do not think everyone got the memo that this is a 6 months thing not just a 2 week event to wait out. We should know which end is up sometimes between July 4th and Labor Day as I see it currently.

Now in two weeks we may all decide to go where we wish and when we wish. There is not enough law to prevent that from happening we can see on the beaches in FL today. I think like in the past unemployment benefits will be renewed every 6 months for years if needed for food and housing. If we get hungry before it is over that may be a plus of the generations to come.

Hopefully most will stay put until the spread rate finally gets lower and lower week by week. We will come out of this and continue moving forward. Then we will have to decide it is OK to play second fiddle to China like England did when we replaced them as the most powerful nation.

This virus is real. It may leave a scar on the minds of the kids like the great depression did on my parents when they were still just kids. It changed them for a life time. Many of us are to near the end of the road for it to matter that much in some ways. The stock market will work its way to 50,000 and beyond if history continues to repeat. A 100 years ago the Spanish Flu changed the lives of many and the Great Depression followed about a decade later. We can lose our lives and our wealth like a 100 years or so ago but the earth keeps spinning the the sun keeps coming up every morning on the survivors.

After the talk of the last few days we much now be down by about 25 trillion when it comes to the USA national debt. We have whole industries about to change ownership. The home schooling of 2020 may turn out to be a good thing. Time will tell as it always does.

If we have a new generation that can produce more like Francis Collins in the above article they will be OK long term.

We are just in the dark currently but with the likes of Francis Collins and the many men and women like him we will be lead into the light again talking about EV's and Mars. Man like grand plans and they will be coming sooner than we realize. The next generation or two will be better and stronger due to overcoming COVID-19.

Could you bake it in the oven (low enough not to burn it) to sterilize it ?

On a different note, is anyone planning to expand their garden because of this ? I'm trying to talk the Mrs into it.

Good stuff Gale!!!

The good thing economically is the entire World is in this one. We can free up a tremendous amount of financial resources by simply snipping the cord to the multitude of nations that we give money to. So I don't worry about a financial crash. If it happens we will come out on top.

I read that 140*F will kill the virus but that is just something I read not 100% sure...

There are shortage of all types of supplyes, all of this was imported and we didn't have any local production, now local industries have been able to start up production of some types of protection clothing and sanitizer.

This is the status in Norway and Sweden

The Germans kinda ignored this whole ordeal and are now paying severe consequences and it's still just starting. (Ignore the arrow, this was just a picture I just found)

Over here, the Government took forever to close the border and most of the flights, so what could be controlled at first, is now uncontrollable. We're going to get into Emergency State in a couple hours. Up until now, you could land here and go to wherever you needed to go, without a single question asked.

I hope such a event as this will open the eyes of people and government to stop the long term idea of bigger and bigger farms, smaller farms over large areas will be a more robust system when a crisis hits. Food and animal care should not be considered as a industry in the same way as a car factory, it's essential for national security.

Just to the west of where I live are many farmers producing chickens and turkeys to feed the world. Tyson (larger corporate farm) owns the chickens and the feed they eat; the farmers own the farms and the houses and provide the water/electricity/gas and labor to raise the birds up. One of my friends has 6 houses and sells 10's of thousands of dollars worth of birds every 6 weeks. We here in america literally feed a lot of the world. They were looking forward to the deal with China and all of the birds they were going to ship over there as China has a meat shortage. Their swine population has been wiped out recently by swine fever, and they are low on chickens too. How this will shake out now, I don't know. But I suspect the Chinese are still hungry, and we are still raising meat. I have no doubt that American farmers can continue to help feed a large portion of the world including ourselves.

Tell me why the Germans have so few dead people.? Tell me why Italy has so many.

Hope the trend to out source all kinds of drugs and medical equipment to China is stopping, the same with the idea to make essential drugs in China and sometimes to just one factory. We are giving China a trade weapon they can use against all the world, and China are rapidly increasing the pressure and surveillance on the Chinese people, all principles are obviously going out the window when dealing with China's communist regime, everything is Ok so long as you can make money. And China is using more and more of its economical power to stop all critic, when a Chinese dissident got the Nobel peace prize it took a decade before China wanted to have anything to do with Norway, now it's Sweden that gets it, somebody of importance have criticized China and they are trying to force Sweden's government to take action against all that does not please them.

I agree. And in times like these we will eat first. There would be no reason to export unless there becomes an excess.

We may suffer shortages of "trinkets" but we'll eat.

Sad to say, that's human nature. Happens right here on this thread and the four prior ones..... :(

Probably healthcare system quality is much higher in Germany than Italy.

Thanks for sharing that data. Clearly we are in the middle of this mess. As long as these numbers keep climbing we know the end is not near. Keep us updated from time to time.

I could not agree with you more. Finding out that 95% of our antibiotics are made in China was a real "eye opener" .. I had no idea. I knew there were other critical things we need made in China and I knew they had us by the "short hairs" on many of these things but I had no idea something as critical as drugs could be used against us as a weapon like the rumblings coming from China from their communist party propaganda organ. I think these things demonstrate that China is still the enemy of the free world. Always have been, but this brings it to light.

Food processing plants are not so different than grocery stores etc. when it comes to contamination...The only way to protect the public from such is to constantly monitor all the personnel that comes in proximity of goods...

If one person on a chicken processing line is infected the line has to be shut down...maybe an entire plant?
