Update:

I just did some online reading of a recent journal article that has measured the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They reported a diameter of ~ 60 - 140 nm, or 0.06 - 0.14 microns. So again, this is significantly smaller than what an N95 mask is going to filter out (0.3 microns). However, assuming it is suspended in a droplet of secretions (mucus, saliva, etc.) it may be slightly larger. It seems reasonable, therefore, that an N95 MAY filter SOME of the infected droplets, but the personal protection still seems minimal to me. A better approach is simply maintain a 6 feet separation distance, and don't let someone cough or sneeze directly on you. But, if you think you may be sick and absolutely HAVE to go out, then wearing one will protect others.

Also, covid is not "alive" in the sense that most of us think. It is just a small amount of genetic material, surrounded by a covering made up of protein, and covered with spikes that attach to our cells. Think of it as deadly pollen floating in the air. An infected person sneezes and they blast out these nasty spores that float in the air for hours, ready to be breathed in by another host. FUN

Doesn't "floating in the air for hours" kinda make a six feet distance between people seem like not enough??

Our paper & candle sky lanters go much farther than that in mere minutes.

Consensus seems to be that we're just biding our time with a 50/50 chance of dying later this year.

Still wondering how Ebola, SARS, or Hanta didn't get us all already.

My dog just sneezed!

We ran out of food for our Newfie so we didn't go ahead and have her tested. Must have been ok though, she was delicious. :D

So, the efficacy of a mask is not in protecting yourself, but in protecting others. So, wearing it yourself does very little. But, if everyone else wears one, YOU will be protected.
So do we need a mask with a UV chamber to "kill" the virus? Maybe a miniature blacklight mustache?

I'm trying to keep 100 meters from everyone but my wife.

Be safe, stay spaced out.

/edit - face mask
Breathing apparatus with ultraviolet light emitting diode
Jul 3, 2014
A breathing apparatus according to embodiments of the invention includes a facemask portion sized to cover a lower portion of a wearer's face. The facemask portion includes a flow chamber. The flow chamber includes a first opening disposed near a first end of the flow chamber, a second opening disposed near a second end of the flow chamber, and a serpentine passage disposed between the first opening and the second opening. At least one light emitting diode configured to emit light having a peak wavelength in the ultraviolet range is disposed in the serpentine passage. The at least one light emitting diode is disposed off center relative to a centerline oriented along a direction of air flow through the serpentine passage. Guys,

Appreciate your concerns. Just a bit of background.

I live in a very remote part of the state. 3 houses on the 2.5 mile road to my place and I am I surrounded by 1000's of acres of state land. My neighbor is not far from my mailbox...which is 2.5 miles away. This neighbor has been taking precautions (as we have). He is worried as well and being careful. If there are other cars at the neighbors we had already decided not to go in.

Closest town is Johannesburg...12 miles away. It has a population density of 14 people per square mile. No cases in our county (10k) and 1 case in the next county from a man at our church who had returned from a mission to Ethiopia...none of the others on the mission tested positive.

Like I said, we are remote. I know that it only takes one contact to screw things up so we will be careful.

I cannot imagine living without any other human interaction for another 3-4 weeks....maybe longer????? TBN is a great outlet but not the same as a friend.

Just an update...

Pulled into the drive and we talked for 10 minutes while my fiancé and I sat in the truck. Never entered the house. My neighbor reported that panic buying has hit our little slice of heaven. Walmart shelves are near empty. It seems the Governors "shutdown" announcement today triggered the panic.

We were thinking of picking up more things this week but that was before the panic hit. Most of the "excitement" should pass in a couple of weeks as this becomes the "new normal", and by then stores will have time to get re-supplied. We do not lack for any items so no urgency to restock our preps.

We have an advantage in being remote, as it significantly lowers our contact/exposure risks. The downside is lack of medical facilities. It will not take long to overwhelm our infrastructure.

Hard to fathom that less than two weeks ago we were in pissing matches as to whether "this is just a flu". On another forum I frequent (shooting), there are still many think this is a conspiracy to take away our rights. Nearly got banned there so keeping a low profile.

Love the posts some of you have shared about acts of kindness. We need more of that and less sniping at each other IMHO
