I just purchased a new Leinbach PHD and the gearbox is dry. Manual says use 90 weight gear oil. I have an unopened bottle of Super Tech synthetic blend SAE 75W-90. "A multi-purpose, extreme pressure (EP) gear lubricant to be used where API GL-5 lubricants are recommended."

Duh... does the 75W part of 75W-90 mean 75 weight? Can I use this lubricant for this application?

Thanks!

That should work just fine.

I think it means that it's 75 weight at 0 degrees F and 90 weight at a higher temperature, like 210F or something similar.

Not the best fluid, but yes, it will work. In the winter in NY, might flow a little slow until warm.

Thanks to all. What are some of the better brands of 90W gear oil?

your synthetic 75 w 90 is arguaply a BETTER lube than a plain 90w.. and it should flow nicely in arctic winter.. thus th elower first number and the fact it is synthetic.

our big dump trucks now spec 75w90 ONLY in their rear and rear rear ends..

that should tell you somehting.

this winter we had single digits.

it's a well known fact that many go for synthetic for cold pour point viscosity and better residual lube film strength on gears .. which makes for less wear at startup and in cold climates.

the data is out there.. read it

Just dump it in. Weight doesn't matter much. As long as it is 'EP' rated (aka GL-5), that is all you need to worry about. Also, as far as quality goes, Supertech oil is just fine.
