...On a side note...its easy to assume most people buy over the net but in reality I think the number is *very* small. Itll take another generation or two for it to become truly common place....if it does at all.

I suspect the online purchase might be made AFTER seeing/driving/evaluating the unit in person. I know I do that for cars. But I bought my tractor locally, primarily because there aren't nearly as many Kubota dealers as there are Chevrolets.

Right...I was thinking along the lines of the number of computer savvy users willing to do business sight unseen. The first number (computer savvy) is a very small number in itself. The number willing to risk an online transaction is even smaller. If youre part of the 'computer culture' its easy to assume the rest of the world is like you. Its nothing like that though. That makes me wonder how many sales the complaining dealers were really losing.... I suspect the number was tiny. Even w/ the current arrangement NH made w/ their dealers I dont think anything has really changed.

Without presuming to speak for the dealers who complained, I would guess that part of their dismay was a customer's ability to see a price online that was much lower then the price the local dealership was offering. Giving the customer access to information about a lower price on line would give the customer some level of confidence while trying to negotiate a lower price with the local dealer.

Kind of a "How can he offer that price, but you can't?" situation.

I ran into this problem constantly when looking for a Kubota. The northeast dealers were all at or above general MSRP pricing. When you brought up I can get elsewhere for?, they get very defensive.,. My father in law found out more than 30 years ago,, low profit margin and low trade in values kept his Dodge/Chrysler dealership going when many others failed, To add to this, he was out in nowheresville to boot.. Sold 370 pick ups a year, for many years,, Got plaques for this every year and on some, a free trip somewhere. IF he tried keeping the prices like Hartford CT, Worcester or SPringfeild MA did/continues to,, he would have gone out many years ago,, The northeast tractor dealers are still using the old yankee way of doing things.. They're loss for not updating to the times.. I don't feel sorry for any of them.

I can't speak for the other areas but the WNY dealers seem to be doing well with the "yankee" way.

Different areas have different cost associated with doing business. Property taxes, county taxes, state taxes all of these play a role in the tractors final price. I am not sure what it is like in NC but in NY we have a lot of taxes and the dealers have to pay the same taxes. I get my equipment tax exempt but the dealers still have to pay their taxes.

1. People in this thread are wise enough to come to their own conclusions.
2. Please don't speak for me.

No offense intended Mike...
Just expressing an opinion...

Hello Everyone!

This is Ted Corriher from Corriher Implement Company. I found this thread, and wanted to post a reply. I could not believe how many people responded to it, and how much people knew about our situation with New Holland.

New Holland did not want us to sell their tractors online, or advertise pricing online. After many attempts to come to an agreement, we decided to give up the New Holland line of tractors not because the product wasn't good, but because we grew tired of trying to work with a company that wanted to force us to do things the "old way" simply because it worked out well for them, and them alone.

Fast forward two years . . . now, we no longer sell tractors. . . we sell almost anything you can put on a Tractor, Skid Steer, or Excavator online. We hand picked American Manufacturers that were willing to adapt to the "new way" of doing business online.

Just wanted to shed some light on this situation, and let you know that the world is indeed FLAT.

I purchased a machine from a New Holland dealer in N.C. The reason I purchased down there was because of the great savings. They advertised in MY local heavy equipment trader with their prices. I saved almost 10k buying down south. The local guys were going crazy because of this. Now I don't really understand the dealer side of things so I can only speak as a customer. I went to three local New Holland dealers. All were within $1500 of each other. Why would I pay 40k for somthing when I could get it for 30k? I'm all for supporting the local guy, but come on 10k is 10k. A local contractor had the same machine I was looking at. He paid 30k from a local dealer. He also has been doing business with them for 15 years. So because this is my first machine I have to pay an extra 10k? The local contractor dealt with the same dealership and salesman. I guess my point is,why should I pay more than sombody else? I even asked the local guy if we could meet in the middle. He didn't want to hear it so I went to X in N.C. He called about a month later asking if I purchased a machine yet. I told him I did and he not only lost a sale but a customer too. I would not even go there for oil.
I think what Corriher and X did was great. Made everyone up here realize they had been getting screwed for years.

And now both Corriher and Tarheel are both gone... That tells me something. A dealer needs to make money to stay in business. I'm all for shopping around for a good deal but in the end a good strong dealer that gives "fair" prices and good service will out live them all.
