Cost of cutting edge

Slippy, you should consider a bolt on tooth bar to go over your cutting edge. You mention removing old blacktop as a first project and a toothbar will bite into that stuff easily helping to break it up, get underneath it, and slice it into the bucket saving a great deal of wear on your FEL.

Do toothbars cover the entire cutting edge? Or do they just cover the areas that have the teeth?

Sorry, I was wrong. I got the toothbar in Aug. '04 along with a Farmi logging winch. It's a Woods TB40735 and cost me $550. That NH dealer doesn't discount very much though, and it may come cheaper elsewhere. This may be cost prohibitive for Slippy but I have found it to have paid for itself quickly by time saved digging and greater capacity hauling.

Yes Doc Bob it's 72" end to end, slips over the cutting bar and inside the bucket where a bracket on each end 'through bolts' to the bucket. These bolts are beefy and take time to remove if I want to drop the toothbar and run with the cutting edge. I worry about bunging the bolt threads with some of my rock hauling; but I'd rather have them heading into the bucket than out (they protrude about 3") where I'm likely to forget and gouge myself. I have removed it to prepare for snow, but even then I've found busting up thick ice is so much faster with it on that I keep it on all winter. I have a dirt driveway which the Town plow loves to backfill with some nasty hard pack. One run with the bucket cleans up that whether it's slush or solid. This may be where I get out the digital camera and learn to post a pic. Too dark now, I'll try tomorrow.

Local dealer told me he has 4 tooth bars in stock for the 72" bucket. Price was over $400.00

If pretty sure NH uses FFC tooth-bars, at least that's where my 72" bar came from. FFC

Finally I may be able to upload a picture, here's my toothbar as discussed above.
