maybe its the cost of rural living? i had never heard of Costco until someone sent me an article about their generic drug prices. if you have one near you, go to snopes.com and look them up, pretty interesting reading.

Costco is mostly on the West Coast. They are like Sams, but bigger and allot better. More selection, bigger buildings and ALLOT better meats. I've never found Prime meat in Sams, but used to buy it all the time at Costco back in California.

I heard there's one in Dallas, but I've never seen one in Texas myself.

They're in Missouri and Florida too. I visit them a lot and leave my money behind. :D

The first one I ever went to was out in Washington state.

Yup, only way to get out without an impulse buy is to have a list and go directly to each item and leave. Takes more will power than a well stocked hardware store, well...maybe not that much ;)

They are here in Maryland -- they compete with BJs and Sam's Club here. We used to shop at Costco, but now we only shop BJ's because they are closer and they sell GAS!

How much is the gas at the Costco in your area? :D

I've never been much of a "warehouse club" type person... Does Costco have a yearly membership fee to gain the privilege of shopping there like Sam's Club?

according to the info at snopes.com, they have a membership fee, but you do not have to be a member to use their pharmacy: and if the price comparison is correct, they are a lot cheaper on a lot of generic drugs.
i don't know that i have ever seen one of the stores, and really can't remember even hearing about them prior to someone sending me the info earlier this week.

I think you heard wrong, Eddie; don't think there is one in Dallas, but there's at least a half dozen in the suburbs around Dallas.;) :D

We're not members, but our youngest daughter is, and trades with them quite a bit, both for personal things, and buying for the company she works for. The one is western Plano is just about a half mile from her office and the newest one, on S.H. 121 in Lewisville, is about 4 miles from her home.

Chinese Ocean Shipping & Transportation Company

Per snopes.........

There is no China connection involved with Costco, however, other than that some of the products it sells may have originated there. Costco was founded in, and remains headquartered in, the state of Washington. (Its corporate offices were formerly located in Kirkland, Washington; they have since moved to the city of Issaquah.)

Part 2

(The international shipping carrier COSCO, whose name is an initialism of the phrase China Ocean Shipping Company, is based in China, but it has no affiliation with the Costco chain of warehouse discount stores.)

Costco doesn't sell gas here -- that's why I go to BJ's.

We have been members for 15+ years.

When we were a family of 5 all under one roof, we did most of our shopping there. The savings were tremendous.

Now that the kids are gone and we are down to just us, we still go once a week, but most of the stuff comes in packages that are too big for us. Even at that, the savings pays for the membership in a month or two.

This thing I like is that their quality is top-notch, on just about everything they carry. Even their house brand, Kirkland, is very good. (Darned good thing they named the house brand before they moved to Issaquah).

They do not have everything all the time, but most of the time if they have it it is the best deal around. Not necessarily always the lowest price, but the lowest price for the quality level they have.

Top quality meat too. Their ribeye steaks are great, as are the baby back ribs.

Their return policy to generous. I've also bought things from their website.

I spent part of last Thursday at Costco in Schaumburg, Illinois. (My wife and daughter spent THE DAY at Ikea and I didn't want to endure all of that).

At any rate, I went to the Costco and asked if I could look around without being a member. The gal at the counter was very polite and gave me a membership form. She explained that I could look around, but if I wanted to purchase anything I would need to become a member. Cost of the yearly membership was $50. After spending a couple of hours looking carefully at many items, I decided it wasn't in my best interest to spend the $50 membership fee. Perhaps part of that thought process was the long distance for us to drive to the nearest store (150 miles).

Like others have posted, the quantities are generally very big and don't fit my particular needs. I thought the prices were competetive on many food items, but nothing that would save large amounts of money for me.

On the bigger ticket items, I didn't see any savings at all. One item in particular was a 30gb iPod, which retails for $300, but can be purchased lots of places for $289. Costco had it for $289.

I have friends in the Seattle area that love Costco and claim they save hundreds of dollars each year. However, they have a large travel home and spend 1 month in Baja Mexico each fall and another month in Galveston, Texas each spring. They load up with food from Costco and keep it in the freezer and fridge in their motor home.

So I guess my observation is that Costco can be a real savings if your life style fits what they have to offer. Our life style doesn't seem to save a great deal, but they were certainly polite and nice to me when I was there last week.

Costco is an American company, very successful due to their selection of products, high quality, and reasonable pricing. The Kirkland brand dog and cat food is top notch. I also like their dog pads for my 100 lbs GSD. Their Australian wild lobster tail is outatanding.

There are a couple stores in Plano. We visit them every couple of weeks. I could only echo what others have said - great quality, good prices, excellent service. We switched from Sams a couple years back and have never regretted it.

That $50 membership fee is what keeps us from shopping at Costco. We've been Sam's Club members since the first one opened in Dallas, and just last week renewed our membership, which has now gone up to $40 a years.:( I don't know whether Costco is any better or worse than Sam's Club, but can't see paying for two memberships. And there's a Sam's Club just a little closer to us than the nearest Costco.

I save my money in a year no sweat with my Costco Membership and I dont even buy their gas. The gas station across the street matches and beats them daily...

I Drink 100% Cranberry (not to mislead, but yes including some grape juices, and other pure juice concotions) . At Costco I get twice the juice for the same price as the local Grocery (Kroger, Schuncks, etc.) Pure juice mind you not Sugar water. Anyway at about $ 4.00 per week in savings on my juic consumption per week I am looking at $200.00... That alone makes it worth it.

Yes most of the major products (TV's, Camera's, etc) are the same price at costco as you can find if you bargain shop elsewhere. Not all most. Every now and then I see some nice deals.....

AndyM: How much is the gas at the Costco in your area?

Last week the price of regular gas at Costco in Winchester, VA was $2.73 a gallon. However, the prices here have been dropping lower everyday. Yesterday, I believe I paid $2.69 a gallon for Shell regular.
