Unless you can't read English there is nothing to interpret about the 2nd amendment. Its very clear. Until it is repealed (which would require ratification by the states) the government cannot legally confiscate the guns.

I suggest you study the law a bit more thoroughly. Limits to gun possession are legal. You cannot own a machine gun manufactured after a certain date for example. 2nd amendment confers a general right to bear arms as I recall but doesn't specify that there can be no limits. The ATF guys might dispute your reading of the law too.

I think y'all ...all of you no matter what country you live in are missing the glaring point. Frequent mass killings of any kind are the symptom of a basic break down in our society. Just in my lifetime I can see a drastic change in the family unit. Knowingly or not we are going down a one way road and the consequences are irreversible. It sounds like a pessimistic point of view, but it is reality.

I hate to admit it, but I am embarrassed about what is on our mass media. Popular shows on TV are mostly about serial killers, rape, torture, kidnapping, etc....have you ever asked yourself why is this ENTERTAINMENT? It's not a question of religion, it's a question of what is right and what is wrong. The lines of black and white are gone...it's all grey and we are in trouble.........

I don't agree. It is not a general breakdown but rather lunatics who get ahold of guns rather tahn treatment that are the problem. It is not otherwise normal people who murder after seeing a racy sexploitation movie or whatever else you fear is causing a breakdown in society. It is lunatics with guns. Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people.

yes there are limits...
BUT the Miller decision held that there is a right to own and possess arms that are “in common use at the time”.
This was referenced again in the Heller case.

I am pretty sure that you could say the AR-15 platform and large makes of handguns are in common use..

an AR-15 lower can be used with MULTIPLE upper receivers each with different calibers.....
since there approximately 2 million of them, I'd say 1% of the 200 million is common...

...The notion that anyone is planning to drive door to door collecting guns is a bit far fetched. Tightening down on how those guns are stored and transported and sold is not.

Hey we actually agree on something...At least the first part of the above anyway...

I don't think the government or anyone else can force a gun owner to store their guns in a certain way...responsibility is with the gun owner as well as the consequences, transporting them is different...I would guess that they could pass legislation that would require locked containers much the same as it is now for airline passengers to transport firearms...

I would imagine that if legislation was enacted that would require the registering of certain firearms (based on legal sales records etc) that most original purchasers would merely say they sold the arms in states that did/do not require any records etc...

From what I have seen... Every state has a law on storage now...
Here is except from NC..
7. Storage of Firearms
Any individual who resides with a minor, who owns or possesses a firearm, and
stores or leaves that firearm in a condition that the firearm can be discharged, and in
a manner that the individual knew, or should have known, that an unsupervised minor
would be able to gain access to the firearm, is guilty of a misdemeanor if such minor
gains access to the firearm without the lawful permission of the minor's parents or a
person having charge of the minor, and the minor in turn possesses that weapon
unlawfully on any campus or educational property in North Carolina; exhibits the
weapon in a public place in a careless, angry, or threatening manner; causes personal
injury or death with the weapon not in self defense; or uses the weapon in the
commission of a crime. A minor is defined in this law as anyone under the age of 18
who is not emancipated.

Really IT? Back in the late 60's how many movies did your family sit around and watch together that involved the kind of garbage that is every day/night now on multiple channels? If you don't think that has any effect on any developing mind your wrong.

OK stand corrected on the legalities but I figured it was a no brainer...thus my "responsibility and consequence" remark...I guess laws were required to make liability an easier case against the irresponsible...

Thanks for the heads up...!

On owing a automatic weapon, you cant (legally) own a fully automatic weapon that is not on the automatic weapon registry. The government stopped allowing new entries in 1986, so no new guns can be added to the list. If it were as you say, I could start importing AK47s made before '86 and be hunky dory.
The problems I have with a registry are:
1. They will eventually close off the list (as happened with automatic weapons)
2. Some states will decide to outlaw all guns of a certain type then they will have a list of where to find them (as happened in CA)
3. A gun registry didn't work for Canada, why will it work here?
