I have read all of the posts on this thread and it is needless to say there are many opinions. When it comes to gun control the point that should be made is never mentioned. How does a crazy person get a gun to do horrible things to innocent people? The most recent shooting in the US was carried out by a kid who was not mentally stable, his parent knew that and yet he was able to access guns. The most important factor in having the right to own a weapon or weapons is being responsible. I have many guns, strongly support my right and the rights of others to have them, but I solely own the responsibility for the ownership. I no longer have children at home, but I do have grandchildren here quite often, so my guns are secure in a gun safe (not a gun cabinet) that only my wife and I have access to open. I also have a small bio-metric pistol safe in the bedroom for quick access in the event we need to protect ourselves from an invader, but again only my wife and I can open it.
I agree with the principle, but with regards to the CT shooting, from what I have read, his mother took him to shoot at a range, but we do not know (from the articles which i have read) if he had access to guns outside of the range.
Were the guns around where he could get them?
Were they locked up in a safe to keep him out and he forced his mother to open it before killing her?
We do not yet know (and we many not ever know).

I agree with your points Aaron, we don't know all of the facts. I should have been more general in my comments as here in my state there have been some shootings over the past few years where it the weapons were not secure and accidents or crimes were the end result. My point I was trying to make is, if you have them own them responsibility and insure they are secure based on the level needed in your home.

I agree 100%. If you are out in the middle of Montana and all the "kids" in the house are in their late teens, leaving your "everyday" guns out and about isnt a big deal. In my house with a 3 year old, it could be a major problem.

Just remember, more people live in Texas than all of Australia.

How do you get so many people in such a small state????? :)

So you think I was just one of the sheep going along with whatever the Government wanted?

You have to remember our situation was very different to yours. We had the opportunity to make a change to our gun laws BEFORE things got out of control, as they obviously have in the US. We didnt have a multitude of assault weapons in the hands of fruitcakes, and the law was changed to ensure it wouldnt happen in the future either. We had couple of mass killings, and it was pretty clear, by seeing what was happening in the US, that it would only get worse.

You have your reasons for wanting guns. Protecting yourself from the Government is one of them that I find pretty unrealistic but thats your business. Protecting my kids from rampaging maniacs was something I felt was more important over here so I happily agreed with the buyback.

The problem is banning guns won't protect your kids.
Anyway, you have a much different society then we do. We know that any hindrance to our rights will lead to other government abuses.

Obviously he did have access to the guns, he got them for the shooting.
He killed his mother while she was sleeping.

I think one of many problems is alot of guns in the states are not in gun safes where they should be. It's like a kid with a toy, when your done with it, put it away properly and securely.

I realize that this thread asked for information about their gun control and no disrespect to our northern friends or our island allies, but they ain't got no dogs in this fight. They wouldn't appreciate us chipping in on one of theirs.

Do you how many time the NRA has come here to tell us how to do things? Just saying.

Very good. A voice of reason. I think we in the US are the ones upside down.

Unfortunately, from an outsider's point of view there were many following comments that to me read (with a big puffy chest) "I'm an American and I can do what I want 'cause I say so". As someonen else said, sanity is subjective. US (and others) are quick to label Middle Eastern views as "insane" yet heaven forbid ask a question about something American?

I'm not against gun ownership. I don't understand the needs or desires to have a loaded one in every room of the house. I'm certainly not so nieve to think that gun control will elimiate crime. I do think that controling/limiting access would significantly reduce the opportunity for someone to go on a killing spree with legal guns. A pistol for protection? I disagree but can accept. A handful of rifles for hunting? I'm good with that (different game needs different gun right?) A loaded assult rifle? You loose me there. More ammo on hand than the local PD? I don't get that either.
.

Well stated. We have some people here in the US that don't make us look very compatible with Canada and Australia when it comes to guns. The TBN membership is slanted towards little to no gun control which is not the same as the general public.

There is nothing wrong with Nuclear weapons in our hands.. No need to ban them. We are perfectly safe with Nukes, unless you are threatening us you will be fine. If you are then we will kill your *****. Why are we afraid of Nukes in the hands of North Korea and Iran? Because the are both run by insane people. yes that is right INSANE. We (the whole world) are afraid they will use them irrationally. There is nothing wrong with weapons in my hands, I will not harm you. Unless you are trying to harm me, then I will kill your *****. There are insane and criminal people that we would not like to have weapons, we need to address that.

Wow. A little testy today?
