I purchased my B3030 a month ago, have mowed with it and found that it was much better at tight turns than my previous NH TC21D. but to my surprise there is significantly less turf cutting. I was surprised and wondered if it were the tractor or just my imagination. but this clears things up a bit with the bi-speed turn.

What you are experiencing is the difference in tire ground speed between the front tires and rear tires in the Kubota tractor. They geared the front tires to run at a slightly faster ground speed than the rears. This allows the tractor to turn shorter in 4WD without turf cutting as bad and helps pull the front around in sloppy conditions. The down side is, in 4WD, driving straight, the front tires are trying to outrun the rears which creates binding. To sample this effect, drive straight in 2wd, while maintaining steady HSD speed, engage the 4WD, you will feel the tractor slightly increase speed. The reverse of that is to drive straight in 4WD, maintaining steady HSD speed, disengage the 4WD, you will feel the tractor slightly slow down. Bi-Speed turn is significantly more technical than that.

Thanks Ovrszd. Didn't know what the technical reason was, nor did I expect it when I purchased the Kubota because the NH had a very tight turning radius. But, even slow, I had turf cut and I just expected this to continue with the Kubota, but to my surprise the turf damage is less. thank you for your concise description.

BizDoc, Are you mowing in 2WD or 4WD? I have a B3030 and use it to mow. I have found that it is very good at turning without doing much damage in 2WD. The only time I use 4WD while mowing is when going in a straight line through a wet spot in the spring. It eliminates any slippage of the rear wheels leaving less of a track through the soft ground. I never use 4WD when turning on the lawn. 4WD is for loader work, wet slippery conditions, certain hills or in soft sand. I believe the Bi-Speed front axle is only for certain agricultural conditions. The B3030s sold in the USA do not have Bi-Speed anyway.

I suppose I use 4WD 95% of the time. I have some slopes to deal with and after placing in 4WD I always forget to take it out again. I also have a sizeable amount of flat mowing, but when using my previuos NH TC21D I just about had to use 4WD when mowing. I don't remember why just now, but i can remember being dissappointed that I always had to go into 4WD. I would try in 2WD and always had to switch, so I guess that mentality kept me using 4WD in the Kuboto also. Next time I mow (if it ever rains again) I'll try 2WD and experiment with it. thanks for the input
