I really like your cabinets. What kind of wood are they? Thanks, Jon

Repowell says knotty alder, his guess is likely better than mine.

I sanded off the clear with my palm sander, touched up with a cherry stain and used Helmsman clear spar.

Changing the pulls made a huge difference, they had old time looking white porcelain.

Here are 2 more pics to see for sure.

Those are red oak veneer.

A friend of mine also suggested oak, I personally have no idea.

The cabinets are made of what appears to be a plywood type of material.

They look exactly the same inside the cabinet and when you look at routed edges from the inside, it looks like plywood.

You can probably tell I don't know squat about cabinets.

We had Formica counter tops. About a decade ago, we decided it was time to replace.

Luckily, I called my brother, and asked about how he was enjoying his quartz counter top.
He said he loved it,, except the extra weight caused the cabinets to pull away from the wall.
He ended up with a 1/2" gap, the installer came back and added a BIG bead of caulk.

The installer said the weak cabinets were not his issue.

Well,, the day before our new counter top came, I tore out the Formica top.
That demo took about 7 minutes,,,

Then I added 2X4's and about 200 three inch deck screws, making sure my cabinets were solid.

When the installers came, the first thing they said was that they had NEVER seen such a solid cabinet installation.

Well,,, to this day,, our counter top has never budged,, no cracks, no gaps, everything is perfectly level,,,

I never took proper pics of the new top,, it really deserves pics,,

The top guy said he would add any feature we wanted, if it fit on the slab,,
so, I added 4 overhangs,,, that ended up being SUPER functional.

If you compare the two pics, you will notice the second one shows the top is about 18" wider.
The top overhangs about 18", I fabricated a large steel gusset to support the top.

My wife loves the added counter space.

Another addition was the spot where the trash can sits.
The counter extends about a foot out over the trash can.

The counter top guy said he had never done such overhangs before,,
we love all the additional space.

Oh, yea, one overhang is big enough for the giant food processor.
before, the food processor had to be put away each use,,
now, it has a place of its own,,,

After the tops, the back splash was added one evening,,

My wife loves the small tiles, but, if I were to do it again,, a large tile would be easier,,,

Found another pic,,,
in front of the sink is a couple inch bump-out,,,

The bump-out does a nice job of breaking the boring long front edge.
Everyone comments about it,, and it literally cost nothing.

In the last pic, the wood menu holder is sitting on the large extension.

I spent my money on good cabinets!
I love the view at the kitchen sink! Pasture and horses.

Built my kitchen cabinets. Solid oak fronts, raised panels, venier sides recessed into the fronts.

Our cabinets are built like that,,, We purchased our then three year old home in 1982.

Two years later,, the woman that sold us the home, called us one night.
She was chatting, asking how we liked the home,, etc,,,

Then, she told us, she was trying to duplicate the home,,,
she had just found out, the cabinets were going to cost 1/3 of what we paid her for the home, with 10 acres,,,

What did she want?? for us to give her more money,,, in hind sight??

Anyways,, our cabinets still look like new,,
I guess they were worth every penny that lady paid for them,,,

And I'm sure you said, certainly, as soon as the nigerian prince deposits that money in my account.. Lol

My first house was a townhouse. I finished the basement right before selling, and the carpet was not down when the buyers put a contract on it. New carpet got installed right before settlement, and they saw it during the home inspection.
Few months later we got a letter from the buyer, saying they had to replace the basement carpet, and they wanted us to pay half. They claimed our cat had done its business on the carpet. I dont know, we did have cats, but they never went on carpet before, or after that. We ignored the letter and never heard from them again.
