The brand name of the temperature crayons Curly mentioned is "TempilStick", made by the Tempil Corporation. They're available in temperatures from about 200 all the way up to around 2000F. Very handy for pre-heating for welding on tool steels and cast iron, as well as heat treating carbon steels. Welding shops carry them and you can also get them online.

Hi, want to trade places for the winter? I hope to visit the islands next year via cruise? JY.

Hmmmm...tough call. Nope.

I had to cancel a trip to Memphis this summer when I got ill. I missed some really horribly hot and sweaty weather, too. Darn.

I love the weather down here, except for the occasional hurricane which I could do without.

Well! It wasn't a piece of cake. I had the housing laying in the bucket. The bolts were broken of below the surface. I buzz it with a dremel center punched and drilled with the left handed drills up to 1/4". I tried easy outs, I always use the square ones. I used the acetone ATF mix overnight.

What I had to do is drill very close to the size of the bolt. Then use a dremel with a chainsaw stone until I could see the threads, then pull the remainder out like a spring. I chased with a tap. The tap wouldn't go through until I pulled out the remainder of the bolt lands.
I bought new bolts and washers. I was torn between nosieze and Locktite. I used grease.

I put it back together, I'll tighten it up tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that Richard, but like the saying goes; "Some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue." If the bolts were that hard to remove, I'll bet they were bottomed out, seen that on my dozer.

Well! This was a statue day, I mean it took the day. I went to NAPA for the bolts. Two bolts were gone, but I wanted to replace the othere 5 also, and thats what they had 7. The planetarys have seen better days, they were statuarys, but now was not the time to order and replace.

Gota cut some wood! Everything has come first, I've been heating the house on twigs, branches and scraps. I ported and polished a O34 Stihl that I plan to introduce to a couple standing dead fir up back.

Thanks guys! The last thing I wanted to do was go after broken bolts, talking it over with other mechanics made it bearable.

That is usually how I approach removing broken bolts. Go right to getting center as close as possible, then drill out larger and larger hole until the threads show, then work the metal out of the threads. Just feel lucky if I get it to loosen up before that time.

Glad to hear you were successful and can get back to business at hand. :)

Congratulations on the removal, most of the time it isn't easy. The last time I did it the drill stuck in the piece and stalled, when I reversed it to remove it, the core came out too. But, I really hate it if it requires a Heli-coil.Jy.

I'm going to button it up shortly, after some coffee. We need it to take the splitter up back. This tractor has done a lot of work, moving rock and what not, flattening area for the barn and corrals, carving out for a larger green house.
