Cow vs. tractor for mowing

/ Cow vs. tractor for mowing #11
Keep a tractor on order but the cow thing is not a bad idea. You would have to put up at least a five strand barbwire fence with the attendant corner braces and at least one gate, a small pen substantial enough to hold a cow, and that would allow loading into a trailer and provide water to the animal. If you still wanna be a cowboy, then get a couple third trimester bred cows in the early spring/late winter, let them calve and sell off the "herd" in the fall when you dont have any grass, then repeat the following year or do the freezer steer thing if you have enough folks to eat a beef. I hate to see good grass go to waste. My neighbor has his own five hole golf course on his property. Me and my cows can only watch him mow his grass in the early spring when there aint much to eat around here, especially if its a dry spring like this year.:)

Maybe southern goats are different, but up here they don't eat much grass. Now that fence your talking about sounds mighty tasty, as well as any bushes the misses might have out front, & the plastic on your new tractor as well.

Nope, they're the same, but a lot of people don't understand the difference between "browsers" (which goats are) and "grazers". Even with 9 goats in a relatively small pen, I mowed the grass regularly. Maybe if I hadn't fed those goats so well they'd have eaten a little more grass. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If cows could keep grass "mowed", explain to me why I needed to mow my pastures 2 or 3 times a summer for the last 30 years.

They'll trample down all the grass if you put enough of 'em in a confined area, but their results will be somewhat less than a perfect lawn. (surface of the moon effect)

I'll keep on taking my chances with a lawn mower.

My cows only eat the pretty grass. The tall obnoxious weeds must still be mowed so the pretty grass can grow. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
