My place sounds like a Steven King movie nearly every night and I often see coyotes during the day. But... they are very good at avoiding people and I usually see their tail end as they scatter away. If you had a standoff for 5 minutes, it was either acting out of character
* or it was a dog.

When I do see them, I usually clap my hands which puts them in high gear. I don't want them to get used to me.
* May have been a dog but I wasn't able to see well enough to tell.
I'd hate to shoot a neighbors harmless dog.

A stand-off implies that the critter was exhibiting aggressive tendencies ... this would clearly bother me... Around here, when I see a coyote they are always moving... and when they see me, even at 300 yards, they grab another gear and move on. A rabid animal will not only act unusual but be out and about at unusual times, such as in plain daylight. Since your critter was out at night, that's natural.
1* Did it see you plainly and did you make noise to announce your where abouts?
If so and it still stood its ground, then either it is unafraid of humans because of familiarity, or it is sick.
Either way, it needs to be destroyed if there is a chance to do so should you see it again.
*It heard me open the storage building door and stopped in its tracks and stood looking straight at the cracked open door never flinching.
I would say it should have seen me as it was only 50 to 75 feet away.

That does not sound like a coyote to me, do you have foxes in those parts. I have come across fox in the night and have had them just stare at me like that.

1*Yeah but one seldom ever sees one.
I saw a red fox one day in the yard about 5 years ago.
Been here for just over 40 years and it's the only fox I've ever see on my land.
2*It was as big or bigger than a German Shepherd.
At any rate It was way to large to be a fox.

I walked out my front door one morning and Wiley Coyote was running east down my driveway. He saw/heard us and took a right heading south into the woods. He paused once in the tree line and looked at us. I had enough time to step back to the door, knock and motion for my wife to come see Wiley. Which she did before he ran off. I'm pretty sure Wiley ate two fawns right around the house. The fur and bones of at least one fawn was west of our house near the "barn." I found two heads on the house's north side in the wood near a wood pile. I have not hear or seen Wiley in a year. I'm hoping he got gone one way or the other. He was too close to the house.

Now, Mr Charlie Fox is still around. I heard him a weekend or so back. Actually shined him at midnight with my maglite. And I have seen his poop around the house. Yesterday I woke up and there was a pile of chicken feathers in the front yard. That is the third chicken that Charlie has taken. I saw him running down the driveway one Sunday with a chicken in his mouth.

I have seen Charlie on two occasions and Wiley once. All three times they stopped and watched me.

Later,
Dan

I highly doubt it was a fox. Look at the ones pictured and you will see they are rather small and mostly just fur. Most fox's are very skitish(sp?) about being around people. It took me years to get the ones pictured below to get accustomed to me. I can hand feed the skunks and coons but I still can't get close enough to the fox's. I can walk out on the front porch but if I start down the steps they take off. Yes, I feed the wildlife. I'm just not sure if I have them trained or they have me trained. :)

got a little knowledge re coyotes, both trapping and hunting. my father in law was a predator control agent(ie coyote hunter) for the fed govt for 44 yrs in both new mexico and nevada. i'm 60, and have spent much of my life tryong to control their local population where i live in nevada, esp in winter and spring b/c they are **** on calving cows and newborn calves. the calibers mentioned in the above threads are decent loads for a coyote at closer ranges, but out here where shots might be 400+ yds a bigger round is preferable, eg a 223 or 243, or any in that ballistic ballpark. i did not catch exactly how far u were from the nocturnal critter u thought was a yote, but out here they see a man or smell one and even pups will haul ***.

Nope, in over 10 years of feeding the skunks none of them have ever sprayed close to the house.

At first all they got was table scraps but in the last couple of years I have started to make them meat balls and scrambled egg's every night. The critters like the food and I like to watch them so I think it's a fair trade.
