I always thought they hunted alone too. Some local fellow was saying that when they all pipe up like that at night that they gather and hunt in a pack. But I'm not sure he knew what he was talking about.

I was just opposite, I thought they were pack hunting and have even told my wife not to go on the other side of the creek at night unless I'm with her. Then I read the article (the link a couple of posts up) and found out differently. I would think the Game and Fish Commision would know what they are talking about.

When they get to "singing" at night around here, it's kind of scary. It sounds like there are hundreds of them out there.

I shoot them when I see them, but that's rare. My reasoning is because they will interfere with the deer population (yearlings) and I don't want that occurring. I'll tell you something else that most won't believe. I have pics from my game camera of them eating corn on the ground! I would have never thought a coyote would eat frickin' corn off the ground like a deer, rabbit or 'coon.

The wisest man I have even known told me 40 years ago that when an animal has an unusual behavior or an unusual feature it almost always has something to do with either eating or mating...

Isn't that about the only things they do?

They also eat avocados off the ground out here which makes their coat look shiny and full... but I don't have any that are as large as even a small German Shepherd.

Our house sits high on a hill and once one starts to sing, they others join in the chorus and we can hear them for miles. Spring in near, so the pups will start chewing up my poly irrigation lines soon. That is about the only damage they do around here... the locals know they can't keep small dogs or cats outside.

I was attacked by a rabid raccoon last spring. It tried to get into my dog kennel, then chased me and finally my cat. It was a big male with large teeth:eek: , at least they looked large when it was trying to take a bite out of me. This all happened during the early morning hours and with all the shooting that took place it never woke any of my neighbors up!
I would never feed any wild animals, it's just to darn easy for them to transmit a disease to one of our pets. Over the past five years I've shot four sick coons and two sick groundhogs.

Did you Get BITTEN????

No, fortunately I wasn't bitten but it wasn't from lack of trying on the coon's part. The screaming that the coon was doing when it was trying to bite me was enough to make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Since I am a bird dog trainer and am out in the fields and woods much of the day rabid animals are always a concern of mine.

My wife was talking to her stepmother last nite and she was telling my wife that her neighbor across the road from her shot 2 coyotes the nite before that were attacking his dog.

It's about 7.5 miles between her place and ours.

I just finished putting up 19 spot lights so I can see whats out there.

Why only 19? :D

I would think that much light should keep them at a distance.
