Coyotes coming close to house

We live on 300+ acres and like to have a variety of wild life, but coyotes can over populate pretty quickly. Our son has a very expensive Service Dog, German Shepherd, Coyotes came in to our yard to attack him. Fortunately our son had the time to shoot the leader. I've never hunted them before, but a family member is going to thin them out a bit to a reasonable number.

Coyotes aren't stupid. I suspect garbage and pet food tastes better than raw cat and takes a lot less work, too.

Recently a friend had problems getting to his pickup. Turkeys were on his hood and defied him entry.

We only see them during mating season. Have not seen wild turkey in a while. Finally seeing them again.

We have livestock and a dog so that would be our concern.

They will learn soon enough the gun fire is not dangerous to them if you are just
Firing at random.

I've seen turkeys following manure spreaders to pick out the undigested corn. Then the hunting season starts and you don't dare blink. Funny how they know that.

The OP has a small dog. Small dog vs. coyotes = small dog loses every time.

Why is this so hard to grasp? The world (reality) is NOT like the Disney movies.

You're going to have to shoot a few. A 12 ga with 3" #5's works great for close to the house. After that, take your pleasure, 223, 22-250, 243, etc, loaded with varmint bullets.

I don't have animals like that here, but I DO have Hawks and Bald Eagles to worry about!. some sick people think it was good to bring them back to kill pets and Human Babies!.. I think that's crazy!!.. just like bringing back Great White sharks to munch on, and many times kill people!!.. Where is the Common sense?..

I think I read that the two wild critters that have actually multiplied and spread their territory due to humans are deer and coyotes.
Letting small dogs, cats, chickens, and other such small critters run around loose sounds like people just trying to bait the coyotes.
Do what you have to but surely no need to be surprised about having coyotes in close as a result.

Was at a large park a few years ago in south eastern Oklahoma. Logging festival and bands and crowds etc. Signs were up warning people to keep their pets on a leash. One would assume to keep the pets under control. Watched a women turn her dog loose for some reason. Seconds later a hawk came down and took that little dog away. Needless to say the women was distraught. Another woman walking past made a remark about it being to bad the little dog was not on a leash.....

Ha! That’s pretty bold. We have tons of turkeys, but they are quite skittish.
