Coyotes getting worrisome

I've been within a 200 feet of two in the Colorado Rockies. Mutual respect. Both times the Wolf broke contact. Remarkable creatures.
That's pretty impressive as there are not many wolves in Colorado.

Yep. First one was 10 years ago at the top of Black Bear Pass. Friend of mine lives in Alamosa. He denied my sighting saying there were no Wolves in Colorado. He has since recanted that statement.

We have always had coyotes near. Seems like mostly spring and fall. I suspect they are up in the mountains in summer and move to lower ground for winter but I could be wrong. I'm quite used to hearing them and then my dogs barking back at them. One night I'd swear I heard a full out wolf howl right outside the house. I sat bolt upright in bed and didn't hear it anymore. I seriously doubt it was a wolf. I'm almost certain there are no wolves here. But I've often wondered if it was a coyote or a local dog which I never heard before or since.

I remember the Colorado DOW denying wolves for years. I remember s there was talk of relocating more to RMNP a while back and it was quite the hot topic.
We get an occasional straggler from Wyoming around here but nothing serious. Ranchers won't tolerate them around here so I doubt they would ever make it long term.

The deterrent doesn't last very long. Dead Coyotes only last a couple days, it that, around here. The vultures find them and strip them to bones. Coyotes think the bones are just another hard-luck dog that crawled from the road. Had a steer die in the field last year. It turned to bones in three days so I know a Coyote wouldn't last that long. We also have Cougar here so the food chain goes pretty high. That's the reason I don't go out back or to the barn after dark unless I'm packing some armament. Heck, I've had a pair of Coyotes within 20' of the back door. They're smart but not that smart.
Under Texas law, they're fair game.
Wow but only if you claim they are about to attack. In Indiana we can shoot on site, as long as it is on your own property. You need a permit if you are doing it on property you do not own. Just find it odd that Texas would be more restrictive than Indiana. Of course I realize if you shoot a coyote all you have to say is that your dog was with you and it was him or the dog.

That is really odd. I had to see it. I suspect that is not actively enforced.

Exceptions
A hunting license is not required to hunt the following:
Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals or fowl.

It's my "radical" belief that many States introduce animals into the ecosystem that they rarely admit. Wolves in Colorado. Cougars in Missouri. Etc., etc.

Just keep in mind that a small pack of coyotes (4 to 6 for example) has no problem taking down the biggest meanest dog you have seen. So keep your pets close to the house at night. I have seen the results several times. North central Oklahoma and west Texas are areas i have lived in with this issue.
