Coyotes On The Move

A young woman was killed by two Coyotes recently on the East coast. Around here there are so many and they are so unafraid of humans even out in the country that the provincial government has put a 20 dollar bounty on them. I've had them stroll into the yard in broad daylight and lay down on the driveway. When I walked out the door and hollered at them from 150 ft away they just stand up and give me an F U look and slowly saunter away. We have a lot of deer here and a lot of road kill. The coyotes are big and well fed. They look a lot bigger than I remember them years ago.

I've seen glimpses of coyotes here about 30 miles west of Detroit, but today I saw two does run off my lot and into the gravel road. About 30 seconds later I saw a large coyote following them, but just holding back enough so they couldn't see him. This was at 4 PM - not even dusk, yet. This guy did not even look nervous - just intent on tracking those deer.

Never seen or heard in a Bobcat in our area. We did have a coyote run down our driveway one morning as we stepped out the front door to go to school and work. We looked at it. It looked at us after running a few feet into the woods. He watched long enough for the wifey to get to the front door.

He was not afraid enough as far as I was concerned. I think he was in the area for awhile but he either moved on or someone shot him.

Back to the Bobcat. :D We just had a man attacked by a rabid Bobcat at the eastern end of the county. This was near a major lake with lots of protected from development land as well as low swampy land so it would be good habitat.

Course we had a rabid beaver a decade or so ago attack two kids swimming in said lake. Who ever heard of that happening?

Later,
Dan

:D

Even a mind as warped as S. King could not create a story of a rabid beaver attacking kids swimming. Who would believe it?

:D

It's definitely one of those 'fact is stranger than fiction' items. I didn't even know beavers get rabies.

One of the large animal veterinarians I went to school with got a call from someone whose Holstein dairy cow kept walking around in circles, he went out to the farm to investigate and while he was holding the rear hoof he'd picked up to check for impacted foreign objects or an abcess, the cow turned around and BIT HIM ON THE BUTT.

Pretty funny among all the rural vets until it was later determined the cow was indeed RABID.

Bad news taking the Rabies Antiserum but he made out okay...

Only good thing about a cow like that is you don't need a large pasture just a "round" pen..:D

That's a fine looking rifle you have there skypup!

We have coyotes and more coyotes here, there are at least 2 packs that I can hear every evening. Sometimes I hear solo howling (or place is on a ridge with long bands of forest and wetlands running north to south on both the east and west sides) and of course there is the yip yapping. I think it's neat.

One cat disappeared once but we've never lost a lamb or calf or chicken. Once we had guniea hens get loose and nest in the forest so they got 'et. There are bobcats here too but they are very rare. I hate to kill anything but, if there was an animal that became accustomed to us too much and started hunting my livestock or pets, that would be the end of it.

Skypup, did you taxidermy the bobcat by chance?

We have lost 7 sheep to coyotes just this year here in central Indiana. Doesn't matter how much I improve the fence, put up electric wire top and bottom, they can jump it. Now we have to shut the sheep and goats in the barn every night. Some friends came over to spend the night and shoot them. Being a police officer, he had night vision goggles. He said they saw green eyes reflecting at the edge of the woods, but didn't want to shoot until they saw them clearly, in case it was a neighbor's dog. I said, if it's a neighbor's dog at 3AM, shoot it anyway! We couldn't possibly think of letting chickens run free around here. Wife lost about 35 of them to a dog attack last winter. You can tell the difference in the way a dog kills an animal and a coyote or pack of coyotes going for food. They go for the belly and guts, leave the bony parts. Animal control people said coyotes are bad all over this year.
