Seriously, how long a cool down is considered slow?

It's been about an hour since I welded it. Down to 300 F. I hope this is slow enough.

The issue isn't if it's weldable or not, the issue is the quality of the casting in the first place. I suspect Vermont Castings aren't cast in Vermont but rather in some far away land and shipped in to vermont Castings to be assembled, as in China and container shipped.....

Therein lies the ptoblem. Modern cast iron is nothing like cast iron made 30 years ago and modern cast iron, if it actually welds, will be very weak.

I'd fess up and get a new door for safety sake.

Even with it broken, I was able to secure the door with one hinge and the door latch. I might get a new door but I wanted to see if this would work. The stove is in my shop and I watch it close.

I'll report back on whether this works or not.

I leave cast iron objects in the oven at 500 degrees for 24 hours.

Oh, I guess I'm letting it cool to quickly. Darn.

Yeah, and you just barely used enough preheat for stick welding. Lincoln suggests 500 to 1,200-degrees, and 900 to 1,200-degrees for O/A welding, and never let the object get over 1,450-degrees.

Here is a really good book on welding odd ball material.

Thanks for the book. I couldn't get it any hotter on the propane cookery. But I understand what you're saying.
I cranked the heat back up but it may be to late. We will see what happens.

Thanks for the help. Nothing ventured, nothing learned.

Oh, dealing with cast iron repairs can be a crap shoot at times! I've had days repairing cast iron and T-1 where I just wanted to set down and cry!
