I hear that! I won't even touch cast iron anymore.

Yeah, and you just barely used enough preheat for stick welding. Lincoln suggests 500 to 1,200-degrees, and 900 to 1,200-degrees for O/A welding, and never let the object get over 1,450-degrees.
