Oh, dealing with cast iron repairs can be a crap shoot at times! I've had days repairing cast iron and T-1 where I just wanted to set down and cry!

I hear that! I won't even touch cast iron anymore.

Yeah, and you just barely used enough preheat for stick welding. Lincoln suggests 500 to 1,200-degrees, and 900 to 1,200-degrees for O/A welding, and never let the object get over 1,450-degrees.

Here is a really good book on welding odd ball material.

Man in the little bit of cast iron repairs I have done, my method was just O/A, and brazing rods. Sat the cold part on the floor, hit it with the flame until it was cherry red, brazed it, and left it on the floor until it was cold. Mind you this was a cheep cast iron dumbell, with about equal parts iron and porosity, no surprise it failed the hammer test. I am sure I spent more on gas then the thing cost, I was new to welding, and wanted to try fixing cast iron. That casting was so bad, I am not sure there is any way to do a strong repair. (I think duct tape would have been better then welding (see my sig line)) All this cast iron repairing stuff seem so confusing to me.

Like ShieldArc said, cast iron is usually a crap shoot. You find out quick if its gonna be a go or a no. your pics wouldnt open on my phone, but if it didnt beat you down on the repair, I would say you should be fine. I recentley did a job very similar to yours, accept I fabbed a new ear out of mild, and welded and blended to cast, and havent heard anything about failing yet and the guy lives local. I think you should be fine bud.

It seemed to weld ok but was not aligned right for the hinges. So I'm giving it another go with a threaded rod to align the hinges.
