Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck (pix)

Von, good luck with your repair. I've heard from different sources that a deck over 60" will not cut well because it will be too wide to balance properly. I've never tried one, but would like to in the future. As an owner of a 72" can you let me know how well you like yours?

Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck (pix)

indianabowhunter,
I would not use anything any smaller on my 5 acres of lawn. My yard looks like a carpet when I get done! and I have not had any problems with it scalping with this deck. I think Kubota does it right, my neighbor has a 72" on a 855 and the cut is not as good. But then he goes too fast and cuts it way too low. So that might be most of the problem. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck (pix)

This is mild steel,he ain't building a nuc plant here.If he grinds above the crack an inch or so,and gets a full pen weld and makes a nice weld, you don't need no patch, once you make that area one piece of metal again, minus the crack its as good as new,in this case better, you don't need to anneal mild steel, man! Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck (pix)

I'm more of a belt and suspenders guy......I would weld a patch over the broken area after aligning the pieces just to add a bit of strength.

One thing my dealer said, and I do not do, is to drive the tractor right over the mower and then you don't have to change the wheels around to slide it under the tractor. Guess I am a bit of a chicken driving a 1330 pound machine over a light mild steel deck.....Course maybe the dealer is trying to sell more decks!

Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck (pix)

Well I guess it does depend on how your welding is. But putting a patch on is actually not as strong as making it like it was intended to began with,if you got a crack, you fix the crack, you don't gom a butch of metal straps or plates on to fix it,I don't care where you wear your belt. Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck..The repair!

Well here are the photos that go along with the repair! First one shows the deck coming off of the tractor. Was too lazy to put the loader on for this, so I used the floor jack. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Next one is of the deck hanging from the cherry picker. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
and the third one is a close-up of the crack from the bottom. I was hoping to be able to do all the welding on the inside, but as you can see the deck baffle is in the way. Oh well so it won't look so pretty on the out side. Have to keep telling myself "its just a tractor, its just a tractor, its just a tractor" /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I guess I get that from working on Porsche's for so long!

Re: Crack in my 72\" mid mower deck..The repair!

Here are the rest of the photos!
First one shows the crack on the inside after welding as much as I could.

The second one is the crack on the outside before welding with the hole drilled to stop the crack from growing, and a slight V ground into the crack.

The next one is after the welding. I put it on quite hot and thick, as I don't want to do this again! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

And the last is after the paint job....So It won't look too bad, /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I know, I know....... "It's only a tractor" /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Von:

Looks great even for a tractor. Hey for what we pay for these toys, I mean tools, they should look good.
