No matter how you look at it .. It's stealing!

It is very petty theft. Still, I would like to hear the motivations of the fired greeter. Something in his 73 years and life experiences is leading him to do this. Even knowing it was not allowed he went ahead, consequences be danged. He doesn't sound like someone suffering from dementia or the like. Maybe he is practicing a bit of "corporate disobedience" like many here celebrate their small civil disobedience's against government? In both cases a statement is being made by the individual.

The corporate rigidity of the "system" is a bit suspect in my opinion. It's not like capitalism will crumble if someone gives away a muffin or packet of tartar sauce, or even if 1000 someones do it.

The real threats come from people like this:
Ex-Maine loan officer gets 10 years for $14 million fraud scheme - The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

"A former KeyBank loan officer from Cumberland who embezzled $14 million in bank funds to pay for opulent possessions, exotic trips and prostitutes was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland.

Walter Scott Fox III, 56, used his position to concoct a fraud scheme to take out loans in other people痴 names over 17 years. He used one loan to make payments on another, and netted about $8.2 million over the years to pad his annual salary of about $100,000 by an additional $400,000 per year, Assistant U.S. Attorney Halsey Frank said."

Key Bank was asleep at the switch where millions in fraud were involved over a period of 17 years--while they may have warned a teller about giving away too many lollipops. :) And then, there is what I would call legalized theft in finance and other corporate schemes that take from people without thought or compensation, aided and abetted by politicians.

One theft certainly does not excuse another, but maybe this muffin incident exposes some imbalance in our priorities? The story would be right at home in a Charles Dickens novel in some regards.

Why does a 73 year old have a job? My guess is he has children that are not $$$ stable.

I believe CB deserves high marks for hiring a 70yr old three yrs ago in the first place and for giving him more chances, and likely some verbal warnings early on, than they had to. Most employers would warn once and then gone.

The greeter is already on the record as saying he did wrong and deserved his punishment.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that you will likely be fired after the 5th violation of company policy. Giving away food or consuming food without paying for it may on the surface seem trivial, but rules are in place for a reason, if you don't like them, don't take the job. Make it a habit, and the homeless will have a line at your door. The company may regret making the public statement, but the guy got what was coming to him. I dislike the food and service at CB so much that I wouldn't eat there even if they gave the whole meal away.
