Cracker Barrel fires good hearted vet, 73, after helping needy

Giving away your own stuff is charity. Giving away somebody else's stuff is theft. Doing it 5 times is chronic theft. Doing it 4 times after being told not to is stupid. Being a vet is immaterial to the "story".

CB is perfectly within their rights. So the veteran has given away maybe $5 worth of goods against the rules. Fire his butt! Other than breakfast the food at CB is inedible anyway - doubt I will be going there much, and even less now.

There aren't any CB's were I live. But if there were, I'd be heading there to see if I could get me a free muffin.

I'm a vet too, but I'd still have fired his butt. Further, I really don't think any of what happened is newsworthy.

I have no problem with violating a thief's 'confidentiality'. There should be consequences to that kind of behavior. Victim's rights trump criminal's rights in my house.

With your way of thinking he should lose his first and second grandchild as well

In my mind "helping the needy" implies things such as soliciting donations or volunteering at a soup kitchen... it doesn't include giving things away which don't belong to me. (Isn't that called "stealing"?)

We've eaten in lots of different Cracker Barrels, at least 4 in Texas, as well as in Tennessee and West Virginia, and as with lots of businesses, the quality varies with the location, and it changes at times, too. We have usually been quite satisfied, but once we found the food pretty bad in one several years ago, but we've been back to that one twice since because family members ask us to meet them there, and both of those times, had no complaint at all. In another one, I sent a message (complaint) on their website about the food and they responded with a coupon for two meals, as well as a call from the manager, and the next time we were there, a considerable improvement had been made. Now I don't know whether the two problems we've seen were due to the management or to the cook, but I don't know how they could have done anything more to make it right.

So, yep, we don't go there often, but occasionally, and we'll continue to do so. As for firing the veteran, I fail to see how they could NOT have fired him. Whether he's a veteran or not is immaterial; if he's incapable of following company rules, or just refused to do so, what alternative did Cracker Barrel have? For those of you who think Cracker Barrel was wrong, I'd sure like to see what would happen if you had an employee who refused to follow your rules, even after repeated counseling.

It was a muffin and a soda for God's sake. Do you know how much food these places throw away ? It's not like he was cleaning out the cash register. The bloody muffin was probably made in China anyway. Only ever been to CB's three times, disgusting food real slow.

Only a muffin and a soda, but not the first time, and he'd been warned before. How much do you think a thief should be allowed before there's a penalty for it? $5, $10, $100??? Where do you draw the line? I've known of retail stores arresting people for shoplifting $5 worth of merchandise. Do you think those thieves should be given a free pass?

You are entitled to your opinion. But you are taking my comment very far out of context, and I'm pretty certain you realize that.
