The local HD carries Yard Machines (MTD) and John Deere. They had, and are supposed to get more, a Yard Machine, with 21hp B&S engine with oil filter, auto transmission of some kind, and 46" deck, for $1199. The Deeres are prettier, and have heavier decks, but to match those stats would run about twice the cost, and for about $1400, the Deere is 42" deck, manual transmiision, and about 16hp. Because I have some HD gift cards, I'll probably buy there, but I'm having fun deciding which way to go. You think MTD is pretty good value for the bucks?

Sorry that this is off the origianal topic so far, but I was looking for input on MTD and found this thread.

For anyone with a long memory who remembers I was asking for the same advice last year, other things ate my money then. This year I am certainly buying, if I can ever make up what I like to call my mind! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I wouldn't buy one. A guy two doors down from me has a fairly new YardMan tractor and it sounds as if it about to fall apart.

I would buy it. I've had mine for 4 years and worked it to no end without any problems what-so-ever. Trust me when I tell you MTD is "Dollars and sense"

SKENT:

thanks for the reply: I wasn't interested in the people saying I bought junk, it was what I could afford, and was in stock. yes MTD makes 90% of the mowers being sold. this MAY be an MTD badged as a sears but I have not checked that close. it started the first pull sorry for confusing the orriginal post. any item which has GAS in it and is stored for more than 30~45 days with out being used SHOULD have some sort of FUEL saver to prevent fouling of the gas and or build up of varnish which will damage the carb on small engines.

If you read the last line in my first post, I gave you my opinion on what to do. I've had Craftsman before and had nothing but headaches. That's why I said they're junk. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've had Craftsman and MTD.
Both are junk.
Everything MTD that I've bought was junk.
I still have an MTD rear-tine, counter-rotating tiller. JUNK. It's now been re-welded more times than ZSA ZSA has had lifts!
Only two pieces of Craftsman were junk.
I will never knowingly buy another piece of MTD equipment.
I will not buy an MTD on any day that ends with a "y".
I think with Craftsman, it depends on if it were made on any day except Friday or Monday! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think Gatorboy should buy each poster on this thread a commercial walk behind mower of the posters choice.

I would like a Scag, with a Kawasaki engine, mulch kit, of course. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My second choice would be a down payment on a Hustler ZTR with the diesel option. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Let me check my bank account and get back with you on this. But even given the choice of any commercial mower I know that Gerard will want an MTD. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
