Yes they are more than your budget permits. But with reasonable care will outlast a MTD 10 to 1. Used ones are easy to find. under 2k.
I didn't mean to bash peoples equipment choices (Craftsman / MTD) But our grand fathers wouldn't even consider buying a machine built the way these new low end machines are.
Everything is becoming so disposable today. Throw it away and buy a new one. This causes many problems like waste disposal, never mind the energy (oil) used to build a new low end machine.
It's also sad to see old quality manufacturers like Troy Built going out of business because they can't compete price wise with what the consumer considers a comparable product for way less $.
