Craig's List

LOL, advertised a generator that had electrical issues for $100. (as is)
Buyer came and it started at first pull!
As he loaded he wanted to negotiate so I said, "drop it" or hand me $100.
LOL, he loaded it!
Takes all kinds. His argument was the distance he drove, well I answered I did not invite you.

I had a Toyota SR5 with a bad engine, and a low price which reflected it. Somebody showed up with a trailer all ready to load but didn't like the price. Then he started looking around for something else he could buy "to pay for the trip"...
Get the #### off my land.

The other side of that coin... I had a small 3 pth backhoe for sale, I had started high and was slowly dropping the price. Somebody called and was very interested but was 150 miles away. We agreed on a price, then he asked me if I would take a check as it was Sunday and the banks weren't open. I agreed, because he was upfront about it and had given me enough information that I was able to check him out while he was travelling. He showed up,paid me loaded, and was on his way.

And his check cleared. 👍

My wife just got scammed to the tune of $2000 selling on CL. I am the skeptical one and she thinks this old bed she picked up is worth some money. So, she pits it on CL. Guy sounds interested and offers a little more if she will take the ad down right away. He tells her his with is 9 months preggers and could we ship it? He will pay for her trouble. Then he sends her a check, Fedex, with an extra 2k so SHE can pay the freight. The check went through, so she transferred funds to the shipper. Then the guy says wife lost the baby and could she just return the remaining money, less some for her trouble. It finally sunk in to her that this was fishy. So she talks to her conman brother who confirmed she was getting taken. So she keeps the remaining money. Yesterday, she got word from the bank that they check didn't actually clear, even though she called to verify. Bank reverses the deposit plus a $15 fee. Now she is short $2k and she feels horrible. I can't say anything to her about it...she makes most of our money...sorry if that offends someone... No, not really. We are partners and if you don't like our situation, go make deals on CL.

^^^^
I'm sorry to hear about your wife's mistake. Some lessons are more expensive than others.

I once listed my sister's antique doll on EBay.

It was in the $5k range and a bidder bought it only to regret as her hubby had lost his job.
She offered to pay all fees etc to cancel the sale + some extra.
Took her for her word, cancelled the sale (softy, me) but sure enough she made good so I gave her a good rating.

Re listed and made an even higher sale to a professional doll collector.

Off of Craig's List, made arrangements with this seller around 9 am that I was coming after work to buy everything he had for sale, a few tractor implements... (super cheap) I thought it was a done deal but called him at lunch to confirm everything and he said that someone was coming at 3 pm to buy everything. I was like what the heck, the other buyer convinced the seller that since I was not a sure thing, the stuff was still for sale until someone pays him for it.

I asked the seller "Does that mean if I show up right now, I can still buy everything"... he said sure thing... What's good for the goose is good for the gander...

I got my trailer and went to the bank in a nanosecond and cruised on down there in 45 minutes (well, I shaved off a few extra minutes driving fast). Got it all loaded up, paid for, and driving out the driveway by 1 pm.

Really wanted to wait around for 3 pm when the other guy was planning to drive in there... just so I can see HIS face but I needed to get back to work.

How can a check go through and then not go through? Confused.

Check deposit and cleared are 2 different processes.
deposit is quick, cleared can take days for the money to transfer from one bank to another, or in this case , fail to transfer.
Scammers count on this delay to fool people into thinking the check is good.

I don't take checks. Western Union will transfer up to $5000. They take the cash to Western Union, I pick up the cash. Paypal is good for small amounts, but have an account only used for Paypal, because you have to let them recoup disputed monies.

Interesting thread. Good source for when I want to sell something more expensive in future.

Around here, we have something online called Nextdoor. Have sold and given away numerous things on it but nothing over $200 (a Honda self propelled electric start mower).
