Going to beef cattle sales and dairy cattle sales. have seen a trailer truck load of 60 cattle loaded and check written and folded put in pocket of seller with out looking at the written amount. Also have heard by phone sales to people did not know each other. seller discribes the animals and buyer agrees to the amount and truck driver contacted to haul not knowing either party. seldom is there a disagreement in the transaction.
Now lately seems no one trusts anyone, Carry a banks letter of credit and the new generation don't know what it is.
Remember when a mans word was his bond. Buying and selling there was a trust. Being honest was normal. not something others wondered what was wrong with him.
Guess getting to old to change but don't like what I'm seeing in people unable to trust his neighbor or those he meets along lifes highway.

New man in charge promised change and we lost our common cents.

Let me give some advice
No thanks...you can keep it...
I'm all for being prudent but not paranoid....maybe it's a regional thing?

I would have pulled out a check.

Buying or selling - Cash only  and if it's a large $$$ purchase, I hide the money in my truck until I'm sure it's the real deal. Largest purchase, $1500 for a Chipper. I also, never haggle on the price... except to pay more then they were asking. Have gotten great deals that way, knowing I was not the first inline but willing to pay an extra $10 (even for "free" items). :dance1:

I think the general presumption is cash until you get up to paying for something as expensive as a car and then it's cashier's check. I wouldn't have showed up and expected the seller to take my check for $700. I see nothing wrong with the buyer wanting a bill of sale for his cash.

I was interested in buying a tractor about 2 hours from me, and told the seller when I would be coming with my trailer and cash the next morning. The seller agreed to hold it because I was driving such a distance. I got there 30 minutes early to see them loading the tractor on another guy's trailer, and the buyer said to me, "got it before you did."

So I turned my truck and trailer around and drove back thinking that if that if seller was that kind of person, there was no telling what shape that tractor was really in and I was better off without that tractor.

I wouldn't take a cashier's check, unless I met them at their bank and verified the check was legitimate. Anyone can generate a cashier's check on a computer these days. And anyone can stop payment on a personal check if they get buyer's remorse.

the odds are (these days) that you are more likely to get a counterfeit C note than you are bad check...

You folks are paranoid...prudence prevails and it's better to err on the side of caution...but not everybody is out to get you...regardless of what you read on the Internet...:D

What's wrong with asking for cash? The check is a substitute for cash; cash came first and these days with so many crooked people, cash is king. Anyone who shows up assuming a person he doesn't know from Adam should trust him is nuts and should not to trusted.

Since cash came first, and it is always good (unless counterfeit, which I have never been aware of running into, although it has probably happened) one should ask if a check is acceptable, not the other way around.

I have a bad check for $18000.00 yes... eighteen thousand dollars hanging on my bulletin board that I show customers that want to pay with a check, when they have that shady look about them.

It was for a branson tractor

Paranoid ?? NAAAAH !!

Perhaps you could cash it for me ?
