I watched and waited for a LONG time... then pounced on a machine I found out about through a guy on EBay. Since I didn't really know diddly about these machines I was evaluating the seller much more than the machine. I looked for a machine that had one owner. Then confirmed with the John Deere construction dealer nearest the machine that they'd sold it to the seller, when, what maintenance they'd done etc. Challenged the seller in as many ways as I could think of: Can I send a mechanic out to look it over? If I give you a deposit to hold it for X amount of time, can I have an oil analysis done? And so on. Ended up not doing a lot of the things I probably should have because I was very comfortable with the seller.

A good place to start looking is your local construction dealer. They often know of local firms that have older equipment they're ready to get rid of and may be able to give you a heads up as to how it's been maintained.

I found the listed prices at usediron and like sites to be a bit high. My preference was to buy lower and expect/budget for repairs than buy higher and hope...
