I would consider some type of sealed membrane that can be covered with anything of your choice...maybe even some standing seam or sheet copper but getting a conventional type of roofing to last a long time may be a challenge...

Cedar shingles are on order from Lowes. Funny how I couldn't get them from the lumber yard, but Lowes has them. I wanted 8 squares, and they had about half that on hand, so I ordered them and will pick them up some time next week.

I'm either going to do the cupola in custom cut shingles with round bottoms, or something else. I've been looking at sheets of copper and thinking about cutting them for shingles, but after showing Karen pics of copper roofs, she said she doesn't like the look of the green when it patinas. That's what I was liking and hoping it happened quickly, so since we are not in agreement on that and she is very much against it, I'm still googling other options. I probably wont commit to anything on the cupola until I get the main roof done. Then see what we like and go from there.

Eddie, Copper colored tin is cheaper and wont turn "Green". Even Aluminum ,red or Green colored tin would look good with cedar, but not to the degree of copper IMO. Black are darker shingles also goes well with cedar if the portion is more of an accent.

What about rusted tin (petina'd)? Saw that on many multimillion dollar homes I worked in, in Colorado.

This site claims to have made the first ever copper sheeting that will never patina and can't be scratched.

Alsa Metals

From my quick phone search, I couldn't find pricing or even a product listing (other than the application listing), but if this is what the soon to be Mrs. wants, might be worth a call to see how much and where it can be obtained.

Love your work!

Copper is out. I want the patina, she only likes it when it's shiny, which I don't like. We both like the opposite thing with copper and if it makes on of us happy and not the other, then it's the wrong thing to use. I don't want shiny, that goes against everything I've imagined for this. She likes the shiny look of copper, but agrees with me that making it too bright will ruin the final look that we are wanting for it.

The more I look at pictures online, the more I'm leaning towards custom cutting each shingle for the onion dome. Nothing else gives me the warm and fuzzies. LOL

There are lots of different looks using slate and glazed tiles for roof applications...

Hey Eddie,
Looking Great! Skip the OSB and strap the roof and shingle it. The look from the bottom side will be awesome. Its old school and works. And a complimentary metal for the copula would be lead coated copper it patina's to a beautiful grey.
Keep up the great work.

What does strap the roof mean? Purlins? I know some older homes just had 1x4's every four inches with shingles nailed the 1x4's and no tar paper or anything else to keep out water.

If that's what you are referring to, I'm not sure I'd get any strength out of it like I will with the OSB. Gazebo's are a poor design for structure and I want everything I can get to lock it all together. OSB will stiffen up the roof and give me a lot of strength.

Eddie you are right about the 1 x 4's that is what I was referring to. The strapping will give strength and as long as you double row nail the shingles and lap the seams it will be great. Another option would be to sheath it with 3/8" x 1" cedar like a canoe. I just don't find OSB to be nice to look at through the framing. I'm sure that what ever you do it will be EPIC!

Here are a few pictures of the lead coated copper

I'm putting in a wood ceiling so rafters and sheething wont be visible. Because of the curves in the roof, I planned on using two layers of 1/4 OSB from the beginning and spaced my rafters on 16 inch centers for added strength. I don't know of anything else that I can bend to fit. I tried plywood, but it just snaps on me, or it's too thick to bend. The OSB seems to be working pretty good so far.

I'm shooting for more of an organic look. Something that grew out of the ground there and is part of the natural setting around it. Hopefully the cedar shingles add to that look.

The cedar shingles came in from Lowes quicker then expected. I ordered 75 bundles. Nine bundles are supposed to equal a square with 7 inches of shingle exposed. I figured that I need around 6 squares, but waste is going to be quite a bit because of my angles and curves, so maybe I got it right. LOL

Every day after work I say I'm going to get a little done on it, and every day, I do other things that need to get done so I wont have to do them on the weekend. Mowing, fixing something around the house, helping Karen with one of her projects, helping my parents or something for work.
