Credit card fraud dept. called the other day...

Since I use one of my credit cards pretty heavily for business, I get the security calls every couple of weeks. If you want to have fun, try what I did earlier this week. (not) When I got the security verification call from Bank of America, I told them "Wow, I'd lost that card almost 2 months ago; I was wondering what happened to it."

Gees, the guy on the other end was so excited that I like to never got to convince him that I was kidding! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Holy cow! I think the callers must get paid a bonus for finding bogus charges. The guy was really disappointed that I had only made a joke. This was the same guy who had called me the previous couple of times, but I'm sure he calls so many people that he didn't remember me.

Anyway, I do thank them every time they call. I use credit cards for all but the smallest purchases when online or travelling. On eBay, if I can't pay by credit card, I don't buy. The security of being able to deny a charge is very valuable.

Yes it is, using your debit card in CC mode is very good advice, saved my butt big-time once! Also, don't know if it was a regional NY thing or something, but last year everybody with a BJ's Wholesale card and Charter One card (we use both for gas purchases) around here had to get new cards. Seems some BJ's employee stole and sold thousands of CC#'s somehow. What a pain. Another thing to realize too is that if you've played the 0% interest money transfer game, when you zero balance your account you must also contact that CC company to actually close-out the account. Otherwise it remains open and vulnerable.

A couple of years ago my health insurance company was hacked and a few thousand names with ssn's were stolen. I was notified within a day that my info was among those stolen. I immediately contacted the big three credit bureaus and had a Fraud Alert placed on my accounts.

I haven't bought much in the way of big ticket items since then and had all but forgotten about it.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a 50cc ATV for my grandson and paid cash for it. Watching him have a great time I got the urge for an ATV of my own. So I decided to get a Polaris 4x4 for me and use Polaris financing to pay for it.

The dealer said that doing the call in to get approval would take a few minutes but then while on the phone with the finance people he said they wanted to talk to me. I went through about 20 minutes of a Q&A session with the finance person so that they could absolutely make sure that it was me. All because of that Fraud Alert I put on my account.

Best thing I ever did.............................If someone tries to use my name and SSN to open an account they had better have done a lot of research and know a lot of personal things about me. Wrong answer = no new account.
