Crimping hydraulic hoses at home?

Can hydraulic hoses be crimped at home using a vise or something similar and dies? I would really like to crimp my own fittings on 1/4 one wire hydraulic hose. I looked but did not find an inexpensive way to do this. But with all the DIY knowledge on this site I am hoping someone here knows how to do this.

Yeah, I want to use those but so far haven't found any for one wire 1/4 hose.

I've never even considered DIY. There is a business in Spokane - House of Hose - that will do anything I need.

I have three cranes. One of them lifts 30,000# 70 feet high. Everything on it is a non crimp field fitting. Other two cranes are smaller and have field fittings also. So I'm fine with screw on field fittings.

I've used quite a few field fittings too, but if a version exists for 1 wire hose (more flexible) I've yet to find it. I worked instrumentation the last 34 years before retiring and have tubing benders up to 5/8, so if I need sharper bends I'll just do steel tube, I have JIC swage lock fittings for that... Steve

The profit margins for making hoses aren’t that good and small hoses are cheap anyway. Just have a shop make them. A hose machine has significant clamping pressure. There’s no way a vice would work. A shop press could be made to work but you would need several hundred dollars in dies and plates to make it work.

If I had thousands of dollars to burn on bulk hose and fittings I'd have no trouble spending several more thousand on a saw, crimping machine and dies. Very cost effective for making maybe a couple of hoses a year. Think of all the time I could save calling my supplier, ordering the hose, and going to pick it up the same day.

Wonder if the creator in the first YT video is still alive? He's on borrowed time from what I can see. You don't EVER use sweated copper fittings for compressed air lines, a bomb waiting to go off and kill you. Air lines, especially over 135 psi, MUST be run in threaded pipe, always, unless you have a death wish.

My shop is 100% in threaded black pipe with WOG valves on the drops, all of them. You'll never find anything else in an industrial setting.

So use 2 wire hose. They have the same bend radius of 3.94". The 1 wire hose is .52" in dia and the 2 wire hose is .57". Is the .05" going to make a difference for your application?

Just a thought. If it won't work, it won't work.

Another option is using the below linked fittings on valves, cylinders etc., etc... and then you can use generic straight male (NTP) hose ends...no dealing with angles etc....also makes it easy to keep spare hoses on hand...

Female Pipe Swivels (NPSM)

The National Pipe Straight Mechnical (NPSM) female fitting has a straight thread and an inverted 30? seat. The male fitting has a straight thread and a 30? internal chamfer. A properly chamfered NPTF male will also seal with the NPSM female.

Just need help to learn how to cut hose properly

I forgot to mention these fittings are mechanical joints that require NO sealant etc...they are much hardier than JIC flares but work essentially the same but any angle is on the fitting and not the hose...

A grinder with an abrasive wheel will cut it as good as anything else. Just do it outside because it’s kinda smoky and clean the dust out of the hose.

Interesting line of equipment. Thanks for the reference. If I ever get out to Grand Island, Nebraska that will be on my list of places to visit.
