Not much for adopting wild animals; more used to serving them for dinner. Nonetheless, my Dad had a pet Prairie Dog that ended up biting him, and I had a "pet" coyote for a few days that ended up biting me. The coyote lost his head at the hands of my Dad, and the Prairie Dog met a similar fate. Moving right along, Sharn Jean had a pet squirrel that was cute little bugger that she raised until it was nearly grown by feeding it outside and letting it run free...but alas, it met its fate I believe, at the hands...or jaws...as the case may be, of our baby dog Lucy.
My uncle had an unfortunate situation develop after he bought some baby skunks. Don't know the details, but the whole family ended up having to take Rabies shots. That pretty much soured me on skunks.
I love the little fawns; they are so cute, and I could never kill a deer except in self defense or if we were starving...even though they do eat my tomatoes and walk in my onions from time to time. Never had the "Yearling" experience, but I had one story I will share with you though. A few years back, Sharn Jean and I attended a seminar in South Eastern Oklahoma at a state lodge there. Coincidentally, they had a wild life preserve and an animal rescue area there with some interesting wildlife displays, including a number of glass display cases containing various reptiles, including a number of huge rattlesnakes. There were also a number of fawns running loose and entertaining the crowd.
Well, it was Summer, I was wearing a pair of Bermuda shorts and Tennis shoes. Sharn Jean and I were walking around looking at the displays, and I was looking at the Rattlesnakes. They were pretty scary, and I hate snakes any way. Like I said, it was a warm day, and they were fairly active. As reluctant as I was, I approached one of the cages with a huge rattler, but being very cautious, I was ready to jump back if the sucker would somehow manage to come after me. As I leaned over a bit to look at the rattler, one of the fawns sneaked up behind me and put his wet nose in the back of my knee. The rest is history. I know they heard me yell a mile away, and it's just lucky I had a change of clothes in the car. One for the books!
