I was told once of a story about crows where someone put out a whole bunch of walnuts by a roadside. The crows would take the walnut and roll it out into the road for the cars to drive over, breaking the walnut and then they would eat the meat out. Don't know if the story is true or not but supposedly crows are pretty smart.

Cool. And yes, a bit scary, but not all that surprising

I've always been a bit amused at how stupid many "scientists" think animals are. Especially there view of tool making and of reasoned response.

Two examples:

One of our foster dogs would look at a couch full of dogs for a moment, then run to the front door barking. She would then go through the dinning room and back into the living room and jump up on the now empty, warm comfortable couch. She did this several times, whenever she wanted up on the couch. A bit scary, that dog.

One of our own dogs knows "upstairs," which means we're going to bed, and also knows "outside." We would always give him the choice, saying, "Upstairs or outside?" which meant basically, do you need to go out before we go upstairs. Each night he would choose one or the other, looking at the hall to the stairs or at the back door for a moment, then he would run one way or the other.

Still, scientists are consistantly suprised at inventive or reasoned behavior in animals even though you can see it every day in your pets.

Wow...animals are really amazing. I don't think we give them nearly enough credit for their intelligence.

Our siamese cat has a nice little round bed in front of the the log stove where she sleeps. Our little yorkie would drag his bed from another room in the house, and fight it up on top of hers so she couldnt get in it, then just lie there and look at her. I swear you could almost hear him laughing. It was a hoot to watch him do it, because we knew he was just messing with the cat.

That has to be a whole different behavioral aspect, as it's not about food, reward, or survival.

They lay in front of a fire all day, play and eat from an endless bowl of food. I go to work.... Who's the intelligent ones here..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would say yes to your question. The crow is the smartest bird in North America...if not the World.
