Oil & Fuel Crud In Fuel

 / Crud In Fuel #21
While my Mr. Funnel works quite well, I believe you have to treat the diesel with biocide to keep the microbes from growing--even if you start with clear, clean, Mr. Funnel filtered fuel that you add to even a new, clean tank.

If your fuel filter is dirty, siphon some fuel and put it in a clear container. If it is beginning to look like iced tea (or coffee like mine once did ), the microbes need to be treated with a biocide. If you have the black or brown blobs present, I think it is best to get all the fuel out of the tank, clean the tank, and either treat the fuel before adding it back or just get new fuel and treat that preventatively. You have to kill the bugs or they just keep growing. As many have found, the bugs grow in the filler tanks/cans you keep fuel in for your tractors as well as the tractor tanks themselves.

I now treat my fuel when I buy it so that it can sit in the tractor tank or filler can for months on end without a problem.

PowerService has been mentioned as an additive to get rid of water(-I use it), but it does not have a biocide in it although the company does make biocide products which I use.

( Their website has them in small, medium, and large but I didn't see where they had any dimensions listed. What size do you have and just what is the "size" (rim diameter, length and dia of nozzle, etc) ? )

Mr. Funnel specifications (.pdf file) has dimensions, capacities, etc. Must have Adobe Reader to view it.

I went ahead and ordered the small size while I was there.

I just refilled my tank and used Mr. Funnel again. This time I took a picture. There have been a few posts lately about whether the funnel worked..... As you can see by the attached photo, there was a lot of crud that would have gone right into my tank. From now on, I am going to use my Mr. Funnel when I fill my 5 gallon jugs at the pump. Then I will know where this crud is coming from.

After seeing that picture Greg, I may have to get one of those. I can't see putting all that into a new engine. Are your 5 gallon containers metal or plastic?

I have the yellow plastic containers. I am going to thoroughly rinse and dry both containers. Then I'll fill them using the Mr. Funnel again at the service station that I got the bad fuel at. This way I can determine if it is the source or if this is some microbiological event taking place in my fuel containers. The service station that I got this fuel from is barely a year old, so the tanks "should" be clean, but I'm not taking any chances anymore. I am also adding Power Service treatment to my tractor fuel tank. Since I got the Mr. Funnel, my fuel filter has stayed clean.

Greg I'm curious where you would dump that last cup or two of contaminated diesel if you filtered it at the pump? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Good question...... I hadn't thought about that yet /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I guess the easiest way would be to carry a small covered container to dump it in, then dispose of it at home. If it is contaminated like the stuff that's been coming out of my can, I'll leave it with the service station /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif, so they can see what they're dispensing.

Thanks,
Greg

( This is interesting because I've had so much trouble with dirty fuel over the course of this summer. At first I thought it was because I filled the tractor out of the farm tank when I had it over there and it hasn't been cleaned out for at least 25 years. I had the same black junk in the tank, lines, filter bowl and filter. When I had to have a new tank installed I had all the lines replaced as well. As an afterthought I checked my diesel cans and they were full of black stuff too so it obviously came from the filling station. I replaced the cans but a couple of days ago I checked the new cans again and the black stuff was back. I'd only filled them twice. Now I've started filtering the fuel as I fill the tractor but I probably need to filter it as I fill the cans. I really need to get me a Mr. Funnel as all you guys seem to think they are great.

It does make me wonder what my trunk tank is like since I've been filling it at the same filling station for 5 years. )

Ive gotten this black stuff in gasoline cans also.
Going to start running it through Mr. funnel at the pump when i fill them at the pump and again when i pour it out of the cans.

Use it again when you fill the tractors tank.
That way it gets strained twice bdfore it gets to the engine.
