Cub LT1045
Just joined the Cub family, having purchased the 1045 two weeks ago. Home Depot had it on sale. Did much research and decided the Cub was the best for the money. However, the transmission has a howl in it, not very loud, but gets louder with a load, such as trying to drive onto my patio which had a four inch lip. Is this normal? Is there some sort of break in period or is there a problem developing? Everything else is great. I don't have a way to take it back to HD as I had a friend deliver it to me and he's out of town for a while.
Thanks for any feedback.

Is this your first hydrostat?

All hydrostats have a whine to them when moving.

I recently purchased the LT 1046 and now have 5 hours on it. It has a whine when moving that gets louder under load. From what I understand, this is normal for a hydrostatic drive. Good luck with your new purchase and enjoy!

Yes, this is my first transmission of this type. Thanks for the good words, at least I'm glad I'm not doing anything wrong and the sound is "normal."

The hydro whine is more noticeable with heavier loads to the tranny. It is light on my 682 when mowing, but when dethatching or snow-blowing is is much more noticeable.

Do the GT2500 series Hydro-Stat's have a whine to them?

As RebelRam said, most all of the hydros make a whine or whirring noise when moving, the nature of the beast. I always used to prefer the real old school gear drive garden tractors, but most all big HP garden tractors are hydros, I got used to the speed variations on hillls and the whirrs, hydros are a bit easier overall to use I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree with you RebelRam. I had an old 12 HP tube-frame Bolens with the 6 speed high/low gear box. I sold it because I wanted to upgrade to a more "modern" tractor. I had a snow blower, snow blade, rotiller, and utility cart for it. I sold it all for $700!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Now, in order to get what I had in the heavy duty line, I'm going to have to mortgage my house...
In a way, I wish I would have kept the Bolens. There was never any sounds coming out of the gear box. Well, maybe a little whin when I backed up...big deal.
I hope I like the new Hydro tranny's... I haven't bought my Cub yet.

I didn't know my new Cub had a "fail safe" mode. While mowing, i noticed I was cutting only half of the normal width.
The spring on the idler pulley had slipped off its post and the belt had completely rerouted itself, stayed on the drive pulley but somehow was driving only the left blade. So my mowing was not totally in vain, did manage a 50% cut. Are there any other features on the Cub I should know about?

I would not call it a fail safe mode. I call it "lucky"
