Since we're on the subject, I like to grow my cukes vertical on nylon netting. They are easy to find (pick) and are clean. You can use anything to make the frame for the net. I use metal fence posts with Schedule 40 1/2 plastic pipe attached. This method also save space in the garden.

Cukes grown on a trellis are supposed to form up straighter too!


I've grown many different ones over time. On the commercial types I had one called Dasher. I wasn't all that fond of it fairly short lenghth 7"-8" but quickly got too fat around. On the other hand it was a seriously heavy producer. Honestly I never had so many cucumbers in my life. Good for making lots of long sliced pickles tho.

I replaced it with Thunder that was good for me. Now I mostly grow what we sell at work. We have RaiderF1 along with some other older OP varieties.

I used to like to grow the Beit Alpha cucumbers. Mediterranean or middle eastern types they're known as. They were always popular at the Famers Market.

I'm sure everybody has a certain favorite one they like. Too many types!

4 years ago I planted my usual 20' X 20' area with hills and the stars aligned!!
I started counting when I started picking (don't know why??) and I got 576 cucumbers from that plot! I was getting 2-5 gal buckets every 2 days!
Here cuc's do best as a spring crop and the plants burn up late May-early June.
I always take extra from the garden up to the Firehouse and that year I was giving them away everywhere.
I put Epsom Salts on the soil before I plant too. (Magnesium Sulfate) I think it makes them sweeter. Everyone raves about how good they are.
