Culvert Advise 8"

When I put my culvert in I was required to get a permit from TxDOT (TX dept of trans). They came out measured the ditch depth, and said I must have 18" pipe with "safty ends". 2 foot ditch with 18" pipe and 6" dirt on top. They had some rules about radius of the driveway and width for private/commercial. They did a great diagram and that is one permit I am glad I got. The old timers told me they use to put them in, but not these days.

Amen on this subject. I too just did the same thing. My problem was I didn't ask permission from God (DOT) first. I found out the day after I rocked it in. They made me pull it all out and start over, with a permit first. Did they m,ake you put the concrete on the sloped ends? What county are you in?

TXDOT gave me a permit for mine. Said I needed a 24 inch culvert and the concrete sloped caps that I already had would be fine.

After I did it and thought it was all done, a guy from TXDOT came by and told me I was in violation for using the concrete ends. I told him the guy said I could and showed him the permit. He apologized, but said that guy retired and he was in charge now. He also said the concrete ends were illegal and I had to take them out and used metal sloped ends.

Hmm. what to do??

I did as he said and replaced the ends to what he wanted.

What really irked me was that in the next county they were replacing all the culverts on the exact same highway I live on and putting in the concrete ends. The ones I had to take out!!!!

As you know from your ex-California days, that happens here alot. Sometimes varying from one inspector to the next? I think you did the right thing by changing them and probably avoided any hard feelings with the new guy that could come to bite you in the butt in your future dealings. I'm sure with your permit you could have pushed it your way though.
