It seems you are reading something into his firt message that isn't there.. unlees it has been edited out.. or added in since I read the post. his post refers to plain old 'black plastic drain pipe'

No AASHTO spec was listed.. nor did he specify that it was a high density polyethelyne pipe... what did i have to go on? Telepathy??

This is the prime reason why i stopped giving CE advice out years ago except for those who are paying me. Someone casually asks you a question with no plans or specifications.. you make a vauge answer based on their vauge info.. then some one calls you ont he carpet and points out a bunch of specifics that were never in the original conversation.

A direct quote from his message:

""This is not the double lined plastic pipe, it is like you use for gutter drain pipe only bigger""

If this is the large ID pipe I see at my lowes.. it's pretty thin stuff... similar to vented flexible 'flexi- drain pipe..

I'm outta here!

Seems you need to update your info on DWP or HDPE culvert

Culvert Pipe and Highway Drainage

the above link refrances AASHTO or American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. That is the "bible" when it comes to highway design and building. ALL DOT's refer to it (although thats not to say some dont have there version of AASHTO recomendations)

and no its not just "black pastic" pipe.

Ill need a few min to track down the assocated areas in the IDOT handbook that refrance DWP/HDPE and its applicable locations.

Again your and local DOT may differ, but i know IDOT allows its use.

soundguy take a deep breath and move on. I also hate it when people jump all over someone for making a statement regarding any posting. Actually, I enjoy reading many of your responses........................

As for the plastic pipe I believe he should go with a metal extension pipe and make sure the proper connection is made or it will certainly fail down the road.

Oh and by the way you were totally right to answer the initial question the way you did!

Back in 1982, I purchased a piece of black plastic pipe, corragated looking, about 10" in diameter. Buried it in the ditch in the front yard. About a week later we had a big rain and the pipe decided it didn't want to stay buried, and floated up in the middle. The City Inspector picked that day to ride by and guess what, I had to pull it out and dig the ditch back out. Decided I wouldn't use that stuff anymore...
