I have an ammo case that I want to mount to the rightside fender to use as a tool box, but the cupholder is in the way. I seem to recall a thread where someone had done the very same thing, and after they mounted the toolbox box to the fender, they reattached the cupholder to the top of the toolbox.

The problem is I cannot tell how the cupholder is attached to the fender! There is a fender support bracket on the underside of the fender, almost directly underneath the cupholder. There's maybe about 3/8" space between the fender and the support, no way to get a tool in there. It almost looks like it's spot welded or maybe riveted on.

Does anyone know for sure how the cupholder is attached to the fender on the 790?

I've never seen a 790 with a cupholder (from the factory). Mine (2003 model) doesn't have one. There are grab handles on both fenders though.
Would you mind posting a picture of your cupholder? think it's probably an aftermarket item.

There should be two holes in the fender if you don't have both grab handles. You might be able to use them. The 790's fenders are pretty thin though so you might want to fabricate a doubler plate for the underside of the fender.
These holes are easily accessible under the fender, but you might have to pull the rear tire to get a wrench on the nuts.

Could it be this cup holder? Aftermarket one sold by JD. Requires flat fender surface and is mounted with double sided foam tape. With the metal springs it holds containers better than the later factory JD fender cups.

That is the one I put on my 4110. +'s are that it has remained stuck for 4 years now. -'s are that anything you put in it will be spilled/splashed everywhere almost instantly.

Kebo....I'd like to see a pic of that cup-holder too. Adding anything to the 790 takes a good plan....as there isn't very many open-space options. I bought a magnetic cup-holder as advertised here on TBN.....it works ok....but I could use another holder as the magnetic one is usually holding my cell phone, sunglasses, gloves, and other stuff.

I've lost a few items (glasses, phone, pens) from my tractor....so any secure storage ideas would be helpful. I sure would like a good chain bucket idea too.

For what it's worth....I've mounted a boat cupholder - the kind that's on a gimble - to the fender next to the seat. That way my drink is always upright, regardless of tractor attitude.

I agree any open container will splash, gather dirt, bugs, etc. I first tried the typical car mug with the rotating lid closure. That helped some with splashes but still leaked badly when on slopes. I finally began using one with a completely closed screw-on lid. The insulated container maintains temperature better than an open can anyway.

Yep, that one looks just like mine. This is the best pic I have of it, I would take a closeup pic of the cupholder but I'm 65 miles from the tractor now.

Looks like mine is turned just opposite of yours. This the way I bought it two years ago so maybe a previous owner removed the handle in favor of the cupholder?

Whomever installed this one had the JD emblem facing to the rear. If you look close, you can see the fender support bracket I mentioned on the underside of the fender. It would now make sense that it was attached with doublesided tape.

Roy, I do remember seeing the two holes drilled for the grab handle. They are plugged with little plastic caps for now, I was planning to make use of those holes to mount the tool box with. Just have to get the cupholder off first! Thanks!

Nice looking 790. Holder direction just sets which side has the opening for a large cup handle. The tape does hold it very securely, but you should be able to remove it. If you like the cup holder, do not worry about damaging it during removal since I still see them on the shelf at my JD dealer and on-line for about $12.

I always carry gear (especially car/house keys!!) like that in a jacket or vest rather then off my person. Much more secure that way. Cabela's sells a lightweight "Safari" vest that works well. If you really want indestructable, spend about $205 and get a Filson Cruiser jacket.
That ammo can idea will work, or pick up a small plastic tool box. Neither would be good for heavy items, but a good place to carry extra lynch pins, small tools and such. Get one with a removable drawer for the cell phone, pens etc.
Boy! Good thread!!! Now I'm motivated to install that little box I bought 2 or 3 years ago!

BTW, Kebo...good luck getting that doublesided foam tape off. That stuff is tenacious!

Good suggestion on the vest Roy....but if I could I'd have a glove box and a center-council and more on my tractor. I always have stuff to store...and not enough places to put it....lol. FWIW.....I did make a good tool box for the majority of my tools and pins and stuff....but its not real accessible when I'm in the seat.

Foggy, good job on the nice bracket. Now that box just needs to be green or yellow.

That's a great job, Foggy!!
In fact, I still have the pictures from when you first posted them a few years ago. If there are to be more tools carried (heavier weight), Foggy's design could handle the weight...much more so then the thin sheet metal of the 790's fender. Accessibility is the only downside (as Foggy wrote in his post).

In my case, after years of owership, I've found extra lynch pins, pliers and channel locks were all I've ever needed to carry in a tool box. As written in my previous post, valuables are in my pockets.
A way to carry a 25' chain would be nice. Too heavy for a tool box (Foggy's box could handle the weight, but probably doesn't have the space required). Currently, I carry the chain (used for dragging trees and branches mostly) in the ballast box or loader bucket (if you carry in the loader bucket, run the chain through one or two bucket hooks if you have them...prevents loss and reminds you the chain is in the bucket).
Since my property is about 2½ acres and the field (about 5 acres) I maintained is right next door, I don't need to carry much else. I have carried water bottles slung over my shoulder when brush cutting that field though.

Yeah....some day I'm gonna paint that box....but this way I'm all decorated for Christmas. ;)

Regarding the mount....I wish I could claim to originate that idea...but I got it from another guy here on TBN. It's is tricky to get that bracket mounted in the right place so to not interfere with the seat or the top link or your vision and still get the box to fit. Then too there is a compound angle to mate to, which makes it a custom fit affair.

I am VERY happy with the bracket and box....and after using it all last year I can say that it does not impede my vision when operating rear implements and it's held up quite well. I did manage to put a small kink in the center of the box via the top link, when I lifted one of my implements (I didn't think I could do that).

Roy, "Goo Gone" takes that double sided tape crud off pretty well.
