Cut a bit of firewood this weekend

Pic of the rack empty.

Also a pr of racks loaded in the bed of my truck. I had my bucket along due to snow etc so I had to carry the forks in the truck bed. If I didn't have to carry the bucket I'd carry another pair on the tractor/trailer with the forks speared thru. 2 racks tied together is quite stable. I pit a plank through the fork slots as a safety precaution as well.

Hello John, good to see you're still getting along well. Nice set-up you have there with the racks (and I'll bet the hauling rig doesn't have a problem with anything you put behind it ha ha!). I've got a similar rack set-up made out of 2" rigid steel conduit (enough to hold 4 cords worth), mine is not mobile though. I'm still extremely happy with the 2003 Duramax Dually you helped me with, my 5'er is tamed! Looks like you're getting a dose of what we had here in the Mid Atlantic a few weeks ago. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to using my tiller instead of pushing snow & getting a little seat time on the scoot instead of the tractor. Come on springtime!!

That is amazing, and great pictures too; I also like shots of tractors getting wood. A setup like this would be perfect for me. I'm going to have to figure out how I can do something along the same lines. Thanks.

Those loops near the top must be for lifting them with chains, yes? Do you find that you use that function often or is there something else?

So - I am wondering if I can support similar racks with bucket-mounted forks on my 770. Oh, and wood would be oak 18-20" lengths. I use 2 full-face cord racks during the winter (we heat 100% with wood) and go through 12-14 of them in a season.

The racks John uses look to be over 1/2 face cord even with 16" sticks. So basically 1/6 cord if only 16" sticks.

The concept I would use is split/stack/cover/cure, the haul up to the house 10-14 months later.

BTW, John helped me years ago with my 98 GMC Suburban with 6.5 TD. Now I have a 04.5 Ram CTD

Thanks for the pictures do you know what tie id/od of the tube is?

Did you do any thing to keep the water from going in the uprights?

tom

The tubes are capped, BUT All tubes including cross braces have a drain hole in the bottom. When dealing with tube if it is anything less than air tight it can condense and make water/rust inside.

The loops are to attach a tie strap to crank down the wood and also help with spreading force.

The closer you can move the rack to the pivot point the better. I would think you could handle the load with sufficient ballast. My splitter was not enough even with the filled rears so I added a weight bracket and use my 40# suitcase weights.

The racks are 48" outside I believe, but run a bit tall at 54" inside so yes they are a strong 1/2 face. I lose some in the lower corners, but gain because the uprights tend to lean out under load. I won't fault you for buying a goat...

Snow is melting fast here. I've been out on the creek, but it's geting touch and go now. Starting a group of pics from the weekend of Feb 20-21. I had a Buddy and Ma out to help split and stack while I cut.

Cutting wood like this was a good reason for buying the last of the legendary 372XPG's. My 359 with 20" bar actually did quite well, but the fact that the bar was short and teh 372 was being altered for emissions was a good excuse.

I had been after these trees for 2 years now trying to get across the creek (splits with an island in between) and finally dawned on me to just drive out at the best place and run up the ice.

There are deer, wolf, coyote, fox, cat, fisher, squirrel, racoon, otter etc all active around there. Less of the deer tracks this time of year as they tend to be yarded up on fields.

This was up by the cabin. They came up from the creek. Could be dog or...
