I always sharpen the blades while they are on the cutter. Raise the cutter with 3ph to max height, put a block under the rear of cutter just to be safe and use an angle grinder to sharpen each blade. Only takes a few minutes. Removing the blades can be very difficult and isn't really necessary.

That's what I'm thinkin..however does it really do any good to grind old blades or should they really be replaced??

Even factory blades aren't that "sharp". They'll have a bit of an angle ground on them but the edge will be really blunt.

If you want them sharp, you'll have to grind them sharp.

Agree. I've always had to sharpen even new blades if cutting field grasses, but let them blunt when cutting brush. Don't want a clean shear cut on heavier brush which sharp blades will give and possibly puncture tires. Blunt blades tend to break/splinter heavier brush with less danger of puncturing tires.

Ironically, if you leave the blades on long enough, they will eventually sharpen themselves... I replaced the blades on a MX6 this spring that have been on there for over a decade.

Wow! Is the blade on the left the replacement blade for the blade on the right? Notice the difference in length..

Yep, that is a new blade. The other blades edge and length had been worn down considerably after 10 years of heavy use (and probably a lot of scalping). The cutting width was probably around 5 feet instead of 6.

I'm thinking now I don't really need to change mine..They actually look okay except the corners have rounded off slightly..I use a Bush Hog 3210 and it has 4 blades..

I sharpen mine left on the tractor
I shorten the center link on the 3 pt and raise it as high as it will go
put my jack stands under it and crawl under with my 4" 18 volt cordless grinder
does a great job and seem to use less HP
just make sure you have a couple of batteries fully charged
my :2cents:

I've considered doing that too but for the life of me I just can't crawl under my 2800# cutter...I think it has something to do with all I've seen in the last 40 years of police work..:)
