Cutting air line over kero tank

My concern would be the same as using a sawzall, metal filings in the fuel tank. If that's not a concern, a hack saw or sawzall either one would be effective.

Pete:

Many others have posted pictures of pipe cutters. In moderately comfines spaces one can use the non ratcheting kind with a little finangling.

Once the pipe is cut you may be able to unscrew sections to a fitting and then use a union and shorter prethreaded nipples to get it all together. Some place's would even thread pipe for you if you have measurements.

( I would suggest, as others have, that you use a pipe cutter and then mend the cut with a "dresser" coupling (as shown in WhyNot's post). The couplings are readily available, and you don't run as big a risk of filings in your tank if you use the pipe cutter rather than a sawzall, but the sawzall would do the trick too. )

That is the way to go. The proper name a a "Dressler coupling". PVC pipe can also be used as a replacement. I checked with the oil company back when I had to change the location of my tank. They said it worked just fine. Been over 20 years now and no problems.

I jest loves them there PVC pipe&fittings ya kin do anythin with em.

These are what I was referring to Dresser Coupling . Scroll down the page and look at style 90.

They are also available in brass, stainless, pvc, pretty much any material you want.

Pete, even if you use the rolling cutter, there will be some debris that will flake off the inside of the pipe as the final cut is made. Just be aware of this and swab it out if it's accessable. If it is not accessable. . . well, the fuel line filter will catch it eventually.

I don't have a whistler installed on either of the oil tanks we have we have. Both make a whistling sound when the tanks are almost filled up. I just looked at my tank and pipes in my basement. There is no whistler installed on the pipe. I know there isn't next door as I installed the oil tank and pipes myself. I know my oil man has never overfilled my tanks or complained. I can hear the high pitched noise when he is filling up the tank. Could mine be built into the tank? As for your problem. I would use a Sawzall if the tank was full. Otherwise I'd use a hacksaw or a pipe cutter if I could get in there to swing the cutter.

Cutting the pipe turned out to be no problem at all. I went down to my local hardware store looking for a new hacksaw blade and once they heard what I was going to cut they loaned me their big pipe cutter for free!

Now for a Dresser Coupling!

Thanks, all! Pete

Thanks for making my point much more clearly than I did.
