I am pleased I began this post. I have posted similar in previous years but never received as many interesting and informative responses as this year. Thank you all. More importantly, and the reason I do this - thank you to all those who gave their lives to make mine better.

I've had hundreds of people thank me for my service. I always instantly thank them for their support. Both are equally important.

My Grandpa shipped out 75 years ago tomorrow to be part of Operation Dragoon. It was his birthday, and he left my Grandma and 2 oldest aunts home. He was 35.
He was seriously injured in combat near St. Die, but returned home a year after he was wounded. He had 3 more daughters, (one was my Mom) after. I was fortunate enough to get to know him well and learned plenty from him.
I'm 50 and can't imagine how hard it would be to leave 2 kids behind at that age to go to war.

I'm going to adopt that response... ta.

It's a rare thing to be 'thanked for my service', here in Aus, but when it does happen I've always been caught 'flat footed' and somewhat mumble a polite "thank you".

I was that way too. Still embarrasses me a bit. Once I developed that response I was more welcoming of their support. I've had people say "I never thought of it that way". Then I continue to express how important public support is to Soldiers. It's a win/win.

Same way here overszd . . . still not really comfortable with it. . . :confused3:
