Jim

Thanks for the quite complete and interesting discussion about painting. I learned a lot. Sorry that the thread is spinning into the ground and no pics. May not be as bad as we were being led to believe. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Regardless, your information was appreciated.

Polecat....... when someone says that I am BS'ing, then I want to know why? You call it sticks and stones....... I call it offensive. If they insult me in a post, I will ask the reason in the post. If they PM me, then it is private matter between us. I accept divergent opinions, but I don't accept people calling my post BS without an explanation. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I don't think he meant you, I think he meant the entire thread is getting that way--without pictures to show all this I was kinda thinking the same but did not want to be the first to say so. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
You did kinda loose me on that powder coat thing but--heck--I say stuff all the time that don't make sense--no big deal. It is all gonna be allright /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. J

I will explain the powder coat process. A piece of metal is sand blasted till it is clean of all imperfections. To be precise, if the metal is unpainted, it is first given a acid bath to remove all traces of oil. Then sand blasted to clean and rough up the surface. It is then hung on a chain driven loop that goes through a drying oven. On the way into the oven, it is sprayed with a special powder that sticks to the item. The reason that it sticks to the item is that the item that is hung on the chain has a electrical charge to it. I believe that the charge is "negative". The gun that sprays the powder is "positive" charged. Then it enters an oven where it is heated and it will bond to the metal. When it comes out of the oven, it supposedly a permanent bond, between the powder and the metal, has been created. In production shops, many times, the preparation isn't what it should be and the powder doesn't stick to the metal the way it should. It will appear to be bonded, but with time, the piece will flake off and the bare metal is exposed. This bare metal will show no signs of ever having had any coating on it. This is what i was trying to point out on the ROPS, which is powder coated. If you like, I can get a picture of this, because my spreader is powder coated and the powder coating is peeling off in sheets. When this happens, there is no good way to repair it. This is what I have learned about powder coating from the company that has done powder coating for me in the past. There might also be other ways to apply powder coat that I am not familiar with......

I didn't think the information about powder coating was the cause of the BS (is that bovine scat? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) comment, but did feel it could apply to the apparent plight of the original poster, who was concerned over the rust around the welds. Then with some others that were also concerned and trying to help with a possible explanation, the original poster carried the thread to another level, when he said he started to touch up the rust spots, and there were "sheets" of paint coming off. That is where I sympathized with him, and as others suggested, thought he should get in contact with Kubota.
I thought Jim had a good response, and was coming from some experience with painting, and is why I asked what one should do to 're-paint' the tractor areas that were 'coming off in sheets'. Jim, as well as others, had some good responses.
That is about when the original poster said, in effect, never mind, I just touched it up, and I don't really remember where the the 'sheets' of paint were coming off, maybe on the top link (or something to that effect). That is when I thought maybe there was some spoofing (BS?) going on, and some of were being led on in the thread.
Junkman, I don't think it was your information (very interesting about powder coating, and just as I remember seeing it done at the Horicon Deere plant for lawn tractors last Dec. on the powder coat paint line) that caused any concern. It was good information to have, nut buried in the RUST BUCKET thread.

The comment about sending PM's is a good one. No reason to belittle each other in 'public'. However, sometimes a comment back to someone isn't really to put them down, or try to correct that particular person, but is done to inform others that there may be more to it than what was posted.

No No, I just meant that the whole thing of constantly complaining was starting to seem bogus. This guy should go back to his dealer and complain like crazy or contact Kubota to do the same. Nothing anybody has posted in response prompted my post, and I really don't mean it in a bad spirit.

( When I picked it up at the dealers I noticed the balls in the heim joints on the 3 point hitch were all rusty. I was told they all come in like that from Japan.

I also pointed out that the top link had some nicks in it which were already rusty. (I realized later that was from where it clips into the holder.)

The underside of the cast left lift arm at the 3 point hitch is all rusty. )

My BX has all the rust "problems" you mention in the above quote, but I don't consider it to be problem. This is normal for the heim joints. Spray a little lube on them. The scratches from the clip is to be expected. The rust stain on the cast iron arms is common for some reason but will not cause them to fail in the life of the tractor. Use the touch up paint.

While I haven’t checked my BX over with a magnifying glass, I think the paint job is very good and haven’t noticed any rust on welds and for sure no paint coming off in sheets.

I did have a large sheet of orange paint come off the underside of the sheet metal on my Ariens years ago while blowing it off with air. The metal appeared to maybe have some release agent or other oily film from when it was stamped that prevented the paint from sticking. So I know that kind of thing can happen but I haven’t seen anything like this on my Kubota.
