Kubota B2910 HST
As background, I've got a B2910 with a BL46090A backhoe. The tractor (new as of June 2001) has 237 hours on it, and I estimate that the backhoe has approximately 80 to 100 hours on it.

Anyway, when doing some rather "easy" backhoeing a couple of days ago, I started getting a forceful hydraulic fluid leak from the line that controls the retracting circuit for the dipper (i.e., drawing-back or "crowding-in" the dipperstick). It's hard to exactly tell from the heavy canvass covering on the line, but the leak appears to be on the underside of the line right where it bends around the stand-off "bar" that routes all of the clustered boom/dipper/bucket hydraulic lines down towards the base of the boom assembly. It's ironic, but when I took delivery on this tractor, I noticed how relatively tight this cluster of hydraulic lines was as they tightly curved-around this bar, and despite the heavy canvass anti-chafe covering, I wondered if this arrangement might prove to be to much of a rubbing and chafe point. Here's my questions ...

1) Does a backhoe dipper hydraulic line failure at approximately 80 to 100 hours of backhoe operation seem to be a bit premature to anyone? (... it did to me)

2) Since I am located too far away from any Kubota dealer for them to transport and perform the service, I plan to order and replace the bad line. This looks like a fairly straightforward job on the surface. Is there anything I need to be aware of or look out for in replacing this line? (And luckily, I have a replacement filter and hydraulic fluid for the backhoe, which I will change-out as part of the line replacement).

3) Has anyone else had a similar problem? I ask, as I am concerned with the rest of the clustered backhoe hydraulic lines that get bent over that bar as they transition down to the base of the boom. (In other words, if one has worn-through, how long before the rest of them start going in the same manner)?

Thanks in advance,
Don

Don:
On my B7100 loader steel hydraulic lines I had one develop a pin hole leak at a bend after ???? 400 hours of loader operation. Shortly thereafter one of the flexible lines also failed. Note; the tractor had 1500 hours or so on it at this time.
I now carry a flexible hoze that's long enough to repace any other hoze on the loader should it fail. The flexible hozes can be made to whatever length you desire with whatever fitting you specify and are not that expensive.

Removal and instalation was no problem for either failure.

I had the fitting on one of my hoses split at, I think, less than 50 hours.

I just unscrewed the hose and took it to a local truck shop. They made me a brand new one in about ten minutes for about $15. You may want to do this rather than mail order - may be quicker, more exact, and cheaper.

Have never had any other hose problems - about 220 hours now.

We have not seen any problems like what you are having with them at this point. Hoses are a weak link on all most all equipment. The swivels are the first to leak on most systems and then any weak link in the hose after. There is not a better way that I know of it is just one of those things. You should even with the extra cover they put on make sure it is not binding or chaffing.

Don,

I've had to replace several hoses on my B21 backhoe but it was normally my fault one way or another. Never had a problem within the sleeve where you did. Might want to make sure there isn't a bad weld or metal spur in the area causing a wear point. I sure hope you have better luck than I did feeding a new line through that sleeve. There is such a cluster of hoses twisting and turning in there I never was able to get the new one in. So far so good with the new hose riding out side the sleeve but I am sure the day will come.

I haven't had to do this repair yet, but I know it'll be somewhere in my future. I, too, wondered how a single hydraulic hose could be replaced "easily" from the bundle.

Is it possible to attach a rope to the hose to be replaced before removing it from the machine so that the rope can be used to help pull the new hose into position? I'm not sure how the rope could connect to the new hose...maybe some special fitting or just lots of duct tape.

Is that a possible solution to this problem?

Thanks everyone for your input. Since I live out beyond the middle of nowhere, I don't have any convenient outlets for making me a new hydraulic line (which I know would be a cheaper route to go). In any case, since I need to complete some trenching for an electrical line before winter settles-in to stay, time is more important than cost right now, so I ordered a new dipper line through my Kubota dealer and am having it overnight drop-shipped to me.

And Rick, I like your idea about the rope ... I will try to use this approach when I replace the line (and I'll post as to how it goes).

Also, one final question for those who have replaced hydraulic lines on a backhoe before ... do you have to bleed the system due to the air you are introducing from the new line, or will it be purged as the hydraulic fluid cycles through the system?

Thanks again,
Don

Don,

The system will bleed any air the new hose introduces by cycling the hoe through all of its functions.

That's exactly what I did last year when I lost a hose on my backhoe. Worked great! I'm quite sure it saved a bunch of cussing..../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
