Oh Man--flies!

I remember back in the days clamming was my summer vocation we dealt with the odd heat stroke quality day, minges, the odd mosquito, and the fearless, tireless, ever-present flies!

Green-eyed ones (the worst), red eyed ones, speckled brown eyes... more you swat the more they'd swarm... I'd stand up, take off my hat, used the "freeze & swat" method and kill 'em all... they only method that ever worked... they cost me some $$$ over the years for sure!

But some of those suckers--you see their jaws before they even land!

Worst case scenario--walk by someone else for interference to try & scrape 'em off! Course that probably won't win any points with "the old lady" if she's the other person (and figures out what you're doing)! :p

Re: Dam Dear Flys look like a delta wing jet

We have a very hardy crop of deer flies here in Maine. Although there are several varieties of biting airborne monstahs that are lumped into a group and called either Deer, Horse, or Moose flies depending on size. I have noticed that they attack the car as soon as you pull into the drive, but strangely, when I'm mowing or on the tractor, they seem to leave me alone. At least enough for me to drive a straight line.

Aside from swatting (which has its own drawbacks) I've heard of an adhesive patch that you can attach to the back of your baseball cap. Since the back of the head tends to be a popular landing zone for these critters, they end up stuck to the thing. I haven't tried one yet, but as the summer continues, I just might.

Another thing that I have tried is a cap with a back flap or sun shield. The one I have is impregnated with Buzz-Off and does a pretty good job of keeping them off your face and neck. They look a little goofy, but heck, it beats giving blood.

Yeah that could be a problem. Maybe a rubber band into a pony tail with an old sash weight tied to the end of it would keep it from blowing around.

Tying your hair up into a pony tail and then attaching sash weights seems like a lot of work. Sure would be interesting to see though. :)

How about just getting a hair cut.

The flies have been terrible down here in SC. Worse than I've ever seen them. Sometimes the horses just have blood running down their sides where they've been bitten. Smacked one on a horse the other day and blood flew everywhere, even got it on my shirt. Some of them are huge and black, what we call horseflys, little pteradactlys! The ones we call deer flies are smaller and slightly yellow colored. But there has been a different variety this year. Smaller than a house fly but with larger, rounder wings. We've got tons of them and they just torment my dog and the tractor just draws them in. These little ones, and the giant horseflys are pretty easy to swat. The deer flys are much quicker.

I noticed the movement thing the day I got my tractor. They flock to it. I was not aware that it was simple movement. I thought maybe it was some sort of vibration that attracted them. They frequently buzz around the tractor and then land on the hood and then they turn over on their backs and bounce around for a minute and then fly away. That is why I thought it might be the vibration that drove them nuts.

LOL that is not an option! I have had long hair all my life and at my age I am thrilled I have hair. Plus it is still very blonde my fear would be it growing back in all grey.
